1.6 na exhaust
« on: October 04, 2005, 08:44:01 pm »
I am wondering what is a good size exhaust system should i put on my mk2 jetta 1.6 na D car? Do i have to worry about back pressure. I know nothing about these cars so please fill me in alittle on this. I got a muffler that is a Apexi N1 universal muffler and i want to put that on, i just want to know what size piping. Or am i going the wrong direction with my exhaust?

I got the car 6months ago and i want to start fixing it up now. I put on a K&N air filter and want to do exhaust system. I am saving for a TDi motor to drop in it later down the road.

Thanks for the help!!

You might want to rethink that Apexi muffler.....it's probably going to get you some laughs and people messing with you.

Rob, you can put any performance exhaust system intended for the Jetta on your car. There are so many that it's imposible to select one for you, so just do some web searching [Google, eBay, etc], and you'll have lots of choices. Of course, those are intended for gassers with headers, so you'll need your local muffler shop to make a downpipe to connect the manifold to the exhaust, sor you can just fit on a set of gasser headers. Headers won't help your engine scavenge the exhaust, since there's no valve overlap, but they'll still work fine.

Some places to start your search at:
techtonics tuning
autotech
eurosport accessories

Agreed with stan, for your 1.6lNA, find a 2.0" mandrel-bent exhaust for a common 1.8 liter gasser "cat-back" A2 Jetta application (recommend opting for the extra resonator if available to keep noise levels reasonable), and install it youself while adapting it to fit your downpipe by yourself as needed by cutting and welding a bulk mandrel bent "U" or "J" exhaust tube piece (welding will be required but muffler shops can do it easily if you bring them the prepped, ready to weld pieces), or bring the kit to a muffler shop to have them install it.

To get the most out of your 1.6lNA: switch to dual outlet manifold and long runner downpipe if you don't already have it.

Jake (fspGTD) has this very setup for sale in the "For Sale" section at a smokin' good price. If someone is really looking for the best place to start on an N/A exhaust, this'd be hard to beat.

Disclaimer: I get no commission on Jake's sales...
