Turbo id and aaz tuning advice please
« on: October 14, 2009, 05:33:37 am »
Hi I have a AAZ 1.9 tdi about to go in my mk 1 slammed caddy pickup from a 1991/1992 model
I have spoke to Gilles and he is going to rebuild me a super pump
My turbo is a garrett unit and i wonder what boost i can run with this, i am after 150+bhp
I have a front mount intercooler coming
Gilles said if i had a K14 i could manage 25 psi but a k03 about 17psi before problems I looked, I have a garrett unit I cant see any details , looked up on the web is it a gt1749?

Any help appreciated, I am after a kick ass tdi, turbo, intercooler pump and injectors and setups/recomendations please?

Thanks Mike

well, the 1749 was what came stock on lots of TDI engines. i have one in my rabbit, on my 1.5. i bet it makes close to 150 horse on that engine. if you decide not to use it, get back ahold of me, i would love to buy it or the center section out of it.

First off, you have not got a AAZ TDI - no such engine. It's either a TDI or a AAZ TD

If it's a AAZ it won't have a 1749, it'll have a poxy turbo.

Id sort out a decent turbo, get the engine built properly as it'll pop over 15psi

Oh and get on the caddy forum if you've not already - plenty of us on there have run or are running big power TD engines.

My last 1.6 was 130 brake and I'm gonna hit 150 with the current one I'm building.....

Thanks Reg have been on there, smartcaddy i think its the crappy garret unit and as you corrected its a AAZ turbo diesel just confused as all diesels are injected! duh got it now though

The Pump should be good and really just need to sort out a decent turbo and mount my intercooler, I work with smart cars and we managed to get 127 bhp from 698cc with a gt 12 garrett unit at 21psi without opening the engines, my colleague will build be a decent engine too, i guess i need some decent rods, i will do some head work too at that time.  Thanks for your advice and look forward to seeing you somewhen this is now mine http://www.vwcaddy.com/showthread.php?t=35029 but thats not me.

I have also been offered a t3/4 hybrid is this too big>?
Thanks

To be brutally honest, if I was starting where you are...I wouldn't bother with the pump YET, complete waste of time and money.
I won't touch the rods on my block either - first port of call will be keeping the head attached to the block and sealed and then a girdle to hold the block together.

You can net yourself a fairly easy 100 - 120 brake with no engine mods, just basic fuelling and turbo work.

Oh and you've got Al's original caddy by the sound of it - all good?

if you are looking for a turbo that works pretty good, stick with your VNT. if you want something that makes power 50 psi of boost clear up till you scatter the bottom end, look into a K26 or something big like that. i used to see over 35 psi regularly from my GT1749VNT

I'm running the same setup in my Caddy. Ported head, Garrett T3 and a Giles pump on a bored out AAZ. I couldn't be happier. At 17 psi, I've got 147 horses and 220 ft lbs. It's wicked in the light little Caddy.

Thanks guys, Cheers Reg yes I think it is Als old car.

I think i will get the engine in (in the diary for friday the 13th nov! ha ha ha) and get another block and start some serious work along the lines of Reg's suggestions.

Looking for some serious head bolts and a girdle, and fresh rebuild too!
