Is this just my 1.9/1.6's low compression at play?
« on: October 11, 2009, 02:56:33 pm »
Backed out of the drive to let my Pa out and it started fine, idled rough for about 15 long seconds and smoothed right out. sounded good. Threw her in reverse and backed out but there was an impressive smoke show!
Here's a vid of me waiting for my dad to back out and I thought something was up, so i whipped out the cell and took a vid.
Remember, my exhaust is split so this is just 1 side of the exhaust.
Idled perfectly clear.
The video may be extremely loud.
EDIT: Photobucket apparently can't upload video's properly anymore. Just turn the sound off it's all jibberish. But look at the smoke cloud.
I slowly gave it pedal until WOT which is when it cleared up. I did this twice.
The temp is 13 degrees C.

It looks like you are in need of more advance. What do you have the timing set to?

I set the sprocket up to the timing marks and i then pushed the pump as close to the head as room would allow.
I don't have any timing tools.
It already sounds like a tin bucket full of bearings though.

Maybe the injectors need help :-\
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

a little update on this topic...
this was the blow-by at the point where i took it into the garage to change the rings.

as always it's hard to film these things with a digicam so i added the paper for lighting purposes to trick the camera into thinking it was looking at the sun with the vapour in front of it. It was really billowing out.... I couldn't tell at first if it was bad but shining my light through the fume cloud it was obvious there was something wrong somewhere...
I've got the head off and i've been staring at the piston heads, tomorrow i should be pushing the pistons through the deck.

So,
the root problem is deep scoring in one of the cylinder walls from something or other. Next time i pull the head i have to take the block out and get it bored.
If i can get pistons for a decent price i'll do that, if not i'll try and find a newer car. Maybe a TDI.

I tried to temporarily solve the issue by attacking the cylinders with a honing stone. I didn't use a ball hone this time.
this stone hone left much more impressionable marks on the walls compared to the ball hone. I could also see the high marks in the walls of the block because the stones are uniform unlike a ball hone.
I'm going to make a new downpipe before i have it in running condition so i'll just have to wait and see i guess.
I hope it will start in the cold at the ski hill this year.
Thankfully Whistler has a heated underground parking lot...
