White smoke on start up

Ok I started the car this morning and there was quite alot of white smoke, it has been doing this since i got the aaz engine put in, it also for the first 30 seconds or so runs really lumpy, but then all is absolutely fine no smoke of any kind even when driving hard,  

Is this just the inset of the cold weather and general cold start,

Oh and i did not pull out the cold start at all but i dont think this seems to make any difference! Help please as id seems to be getting worse but will look at it closely over the next couple of days!

Oh and when we did the swap the mechanic had to blank of the EGR valve if that makes any difference

It's normal for a little bit of white smoke on start-up, moreso as the weather gets colder.  Pulling on the cold start handle should make it noticably better:  less smoke, easier to start, better idle when cold.  If this is not happening perhaps your cable and/or pump needs to be adjusted.

it has just started to get a bit colder here, and it does seem to idle better when i have the cold start pulled out, and it does verry quickly completly stop, so thanks for putting my mind at rest,

Does it start easily or is it tough to start? If the glow plugs aren't optimal, it can cause a rough start and a lot of white smoke...

well starting is a funny one but yeas it does from cold start very easily, glow plug light comes on then goes of and it starts first time, but its when its warm its funny as it dosent like starting without the use of a switch put in by the last owner which sends power to the glow plugs, i get a clicking noise from what i believe to be a relay the the glow plug light flashes and it will start, but with the white smoke it really is just quick but what i would say is a big puff of smoke then nothing at all and i mean nothing even when i really give it some stick!

If its just a puff its just the fuel that didn't get burnt on the first couple turns of the pump. Not a big deal if it starts and runs fine and doesnt give you smoke under Lead footed conditions lol

Ok i had to put in some water this morning so very slowly but surly i am loosing water from somewhere, I now have a funny feeling that is is leaking water into the engine when left standing and the is no pressure, There seems to be varying amounts of smoke now sometimes not a lot and sometimes lots and it was very lumpy this morning, but yet again it did stop smoking and idling badly relatively quickly, Im baffled now, and dont want it to cost a fortune to get right as i have spent so much on it already and cant afford another big bill, I just want to drive my car

Yeah that can happen, getting water in the cylinder(s) while it sits, it can also cause a misfire on startup.

Well im going to try a few other things that wont cost me the earth this month and if so then head gasket, I wish I was a mechanic and had my own garage would be so much easier,
