Are there different 1.6L Diesel Bellhousing bolt patterns?
« on: October 04, 2009, 06:26:33 am »
I am being told that My 82 Quantum has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than a rabbit? They say the Quantum or an Audi 4000 has an Audi Bolt Pattern like the same as an Audi 2.0L Gas engine from the 70's/80's? Is this true? The reason I am asking is I have a chance to get a 1.6TD from a 85 Jetta to replace my 1.6N/A that came in my Quantum wagon when I got it. Trust me, the N/A is way underpowered and I want to put a TD back in this car. Thanks

Thanks a million. I thought there was only one pattern and it was the 5cyl and 6cyl's that were different but I was asking a local neighbor who is a mechanic and he was the one telling me to be careful and verify if it will swap because he thought there were different ones. So, I decided to come ask the forum before I made a move on this motor swap idea.

Also another reason I thought there was only one pattern is because I believe I remember a guy locally years ago who was racing a Rabbit or a Golf with a 8V 2.0L from a 77-78 Gremlin in his stripped out Jalopy Racer at the local race track. I never looked under the hood just heard people talk about.

Thanks again:)

As far as I know, the VW 1.6 and all other 4 cylinders (and 3 cylinders) have the same bolt pattern.  The 5, 6, and 8 cylinder engines use a different bolt pattern.  The key is which bolt pattern the bell-housing on the transmission uses.  Some are for 3/4 cylinder engines.  Some are for 5/6/8 cylinder engines.  Some are for BOTH!  Yes, the 01A and 01E VW/Audi transmissions can mate to either engine.  That's the key.  Since your Quantum uses a longitudally mounted transmission, it most likely can mate to either type of engine.  In the second image you can easily make out the extra holes that are used for mounting this 01A to a 4-cylinder engine:http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24050#361801  This 01A was originally mated to a 5-cylinder engine, so all of those bolt holes are clean.  The ones used for mounting to a 4-cylinder are dirty.  He eventually does mount of 4-cyl to this tranny.

Quantum synchos and 4kq use 016 tranny. These have only 4 or 5cyl bolt pattern. Same with fwd transmissions.

That is WAY AWESOME...!! This sort of makes me think of one more question then. In the late 70's There were Postal Jeeps that had the Audi 2.0L in them... I wonder if those had the dual pattern? If so... I have an 80's D24T that would be cool as heck dropped into a DJ5 Postal Jeep...:)
