parts needed for 1985 Jetta Diesel
« on: October 03, 2009, 08:52:34 am »
I just bought a 1985 VW Jetta Diesel. I'm going to be needing a few parts in the future and was wondering if anybody can tell me a few things. First is this forum to post these questions? The passenger side door handle is broken almost off the door. What years will interchange with this handle? The seats are history. What year will interchange with a 1985? I have only driven it 15 miles, from where I bought it home so I"m not to sure what all it needs. What kind of fuel milage does this car get. It is a 1985 Jetta Diesel non turbo with a 5 speed. It has a/c but I don't know if it works. ;D

That car is so old, plan on doing ALOT of work to get it back into shape. I don't care how many miles it has.

Interchange info:

Seats: 1985-1992 work, although you may have to swap your seatbelt receivers

Handles: 1985-1992 work. MK1 (1980-1984) may work, but there are subtle differences.

Your car is a MK2 (Mark Two). They were made from 1985-1992.

Before you do alot of driving, be sure to check the entire suspension (ball joints, struts, shocks, tierods, etc). The early MK2 was notorious for crappy suspension and steering parts.

Beyond that, have fun.

Quantum TD:  Thanks a bunch. I didn't pay much for it but it's a blast to drive. You answered some of the things I forgot to ask about. I"m not familiar with the VW as this is my first one. One thing I already know about is I need to change the timing belt. Where can I get some good info on timing belt change? Also the speedometer works but the odometer doesn't work. Is this a german problem or am I just lucky. I have a german bike, BMW, and the speedometer works but the odometer died a few years ago.

I bought an 84, and the only thing it needed was brakes and front strut mounts everything else is STILL STOCK and ive been beating on it for three years :) Gotta love 25 year old ball joints looooool

Seats from an Mk1 (1974-1984) WILL work as well, but i wouldn't recommend going to them as they are uncomfortable as Siht!

This guide; http://vincewaldon.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=24&Itemid=28 from our very own Vince Waldon tells you everything you need to have and everything you need to know about doing a timing belt change and setting the timing when you are done :)

as for the Cluster, you could always try swapping out a different one..
