steel gets stuck to aluminum. the end of my cable is steel where it goes into the trans, not plastic.

Ah I get it.  I thought that the metal part was already up, and the gear was actually stuck in there.

Yeah, I think that gasket might help prevent the dissimilar metals from sticking.  I made sure to put a new one on the Golf while it was out.

i didnt get that lucky. my speedo cable is part of the trans as of right now. im sure i could get it out if i really wanted to, but it works, and its there, so its staying there till i need it out.

I dunno what the problem is Lucas.

I popped mine out in 3 minutes to top up the lost trans oil from a leaking end cap, and popped it back in. Weird that you had to fight so much with yours ;)

Yes it sucked. It is out. Now I definately need a new cable. I will have to see if napa or similar has one.
