Ok so my motor is absolute crap and im looking to swap a newer engine into it. Im still a complete noob with diesels and im learning lots everyday. I currently have a 1.6 na with a turbo and intercooler (bought like that). The car is a mk2 golf. I want to swap a motor that will leave me with lots of possibilities for power. Ive seen some stuff where people swapped in 1.9td's from mk3's and i saw one jetta with a TDI motor. Im wondering what would be the best motor for my car (mounts, room, placement). I know its going to get pricey and take a long while, but i like a challenge.
Thanks for your time and all the smart answers to a dumb question.
Brandon.
If you go with a 1.9TD, you'll have a nice upgrade in power. Plus it's an easy drop in. Cool thing about it is if you want to go tdi, you just need to change the head and IP (and electronics if you want to go the ecu route). You'd need to go 1Z or AHU with the head and pump.
Plus tdi pistons, injector lines and valve cover to change a 1.9 td to a tdi. So you might as well start with a complete long block iz or ahu if you go this route.
Im looking at a 1.9 td from a 97 jetta. and a 2003 tdi from a jetta wagon.
The TD will be a quick drop in and you'll be ready to go. The ALH (from the '03) requires mount modifications and an instrument cluster/complete wiring harness swap. Also, the ALH head won't fit the AAZ block. The ALH is a very good engine but putting it into a mk2 is a lot of work.
awsome thanks for the help. Ill go check the motor out if he emails me back. Ill prolly do a compression test on it and stuff to see if its good. Im also swapping in a mk3 dash at the same time.
The AAZ is the easier swap. The next best swap is an AHU/1Z Swap from a mk3/B4 TDI.
