diesel/gasser tranny questions

I'm still very much a noob to the VW's. So............. Someone came up to me wanting to know if I wanted to buy a 2001 jetta gasser with a five speed for parts for my car. This gasser is said to have a broke output shaft on the tranny, and thats the only problem. I have a 5 speed off my AAZ I'm not using. There is no way my tranny can work with a gasser is there? Would the AAZ tranny work in my 99.5 jetta TDI? (keep as spare?) Sorry if it's a stupid question, I've always built chevy truck untill now.

Looked at the car this mornning. It's very nice, sunroof, aluminum rims, etc. Might just pick it up for the rims, tires, etc. But I have a friend that could use it.

The more I research it looks like the input to my AAZ might be bigger. I think Mine is out of a golf. Can anyone clear this up for me?

The 99.5 TDI tranny will be cable shift and hydraulic clutch. Your AAZ tranny will be rod shift and cable clutch. As long as you match the input shaft to the clutch disk you are ok, however the TDI will have a different style of clutch/PP/flywheel arrangement and you may not be able to find a clutch that would work. Custom clutchs are an option though. I think the transmission mounts will be different as well.

Basically it could be done but it would be a lot of work and effort and you would end up with an inferior transmission.

I was going to put the AAZ tranny in the 2.0l gasser and ditch the car to make $ after I stole the rims off it. The want $350 for the gasser (2001 jetta) . It's in great shape so I might pick it up anyway, sell the motor, and keep the rest for spare parts since I have the room.
