Hi guys,
I just bought a 1997 Jetta Diesel.
I drove it home from Toronto to Kingston.
I am new to diesels but I found that the car smoked (black) like hell on acceleration, takes a long time to accelerate and would only reach the 120 KMP...is this normal?
I do know about making sure the car is warmed up and let me say that I didn't by her for speed. I am concerned about the black smoke.
Thanks for any help you can give me and I look forward to reading the many posts here.

Thanks for your help, I'll try and PM quicktd.
I hope it's nothing big thats wrong, my dad said it could be injectors clogged.
I am more of a bike guy than a car guy so my car skills are limited unless I have good instructions.

How many Kms are on this vehicle? Check for air bubbles in the main fuel line going to the injection pump. If there is, it might be time for a new fuel filter. I would just change it anyways, just to be sure. Make sure to fill the new fuel filter with diesel fuel before installing, as it will help prime the system. Has the timing belt been changed before? See if the belt is tight or if it has alot of slack, and looks like it is cracking. If the belt is loose it could be enough to mess up the pump timing. I'm sure that QuickTD and others will have lots of valuable information to add. Also try some diesel fuel conditioner in the tank.

Thanks for you help and kind words.
The car runs, none of the belts shake or move or wave around like someothers I've read about, so I'm hopeing its not a big thing thats wrong.
It just seems to be getting too much fuel and its burning off in the exhaust rather than the engine.....thats my best guess....now the cause of this I have no idea...injectors...pump....turbo....filters...I am not a mechanic by any means so theres only so much I want to screw with.

On that note if anyone out there is a decent mechanic and wouldn't mind being paid in beer and pizza please let me know. I live in Kingston, Ontario and would be very happy to meet you.

Any help would be great guys.
