Hi,
A friend of mine has broke his Vanagon engine, the 1.6TD JX (51kW). We suspect that some rod has broken and then maybe we just have to find a used to block to swap it. I have begun to look at different 1.6TD engines and I have found that there is a lot of choice, but I am not sure if all of them are just "bolt on".
There are five 1.6TD engines: JR (51kW) MF (51kW) RA (59kW) SB (59kW) CY (51kW)
Can I use any of the these as far as I only consider the block ?
Thanks
Nacho
P.D. I know the oil pan and oil pump is different from the JX to the others, but those parts can be also swaped from the broken JX to the other, I guess.
Not all of those engines will work as some (the CY - maybe others) are solid lifter and the others ought to be hydraulic lifter. I don't know if the head on the JX engine is solid or hydraulic lifter either though.
JX is solid.
I may have a spare JX block if needed, ready for a rebuid but better than one with a leg out of bed.
Thanks for the answers, I thought that JX had hydraulic lifters so it is great to know I am wrong ! How do you tell "visually" that a head has solid or hydraulic lifters ?
I think that I will search for a used one in good condition since the one that has blown it was a fresh rebuild (and expensive) one !! And it had only three years ... :-(
Then the questions is, which other VW 1.6TD engines have solid lifters and then are compatible with the JX engine ?
BTW, the engine broke because the crank "slipped" with respect to the distibution pinion, so you can image what happened to valvles and pistons.
Thanks again
Nacho
Great !! That's exactly what I need.
Thanks
Nacho
I have seen a aftermarket mech head that had the bump for oil return hole, but did not have hole drilled. We bought wrong head gasket for it
