I'm thinking of getting an AAZ from Canada and drive it back into the states but it seems like there's a lot of stuff going on with US customs...I hear maybe you need numbers or EPA slips from the car it was on?

It's a bit of a pain to ship a complete motor esp. because of the EPA forms.the first one i shipped took talking to a broker about ten times on the phone, faxes etc etc. The short answer to this is take it apart. Then they are just motor parts
Hell, just drive up there in your Golf and put it in the trunk. Pray they don't do an inspection when you cross the border.
How would they know the difference if you told them that it was your engine that you brought across the border from the states to have a friend of yours look at in Canada, and now you are bringing it back home with you......?
When the rear of the car is considerably lower than the front, that's a pretty good clue that there is something in the back.

Just take it apart, and say it is parts. Removing the head should be convincing enough.
I've meet a few guys at the border (Canadian side) and all I do is write up a bill of sale for a couple hundred and then they drive home. None of them have had any problems. I'd highly recommend not lying to the border people. If I have the VIN number that the motor came from I give them that as well.

If you didn't declare it on the way over, they don't have to let you take it back. Might work, might not, I don't think it's worth the risk.
If you try sneakin' and get caught it will cause miserable trouble.

I got hassled more driving into canada than driving out...

On one of my trips through canada the border guy (with a little grin) says "will it make it?" I says yeah it's not my first trip through in this and he says "well it's a diesel I guess" haha......
