hi i wa wondering what oil i should use in my car for the winter? i need to change oil in 300km so i was wondering wat grade i ran 5w 40 in the summer what should i use in winter or doea it mater?
I run 15 W 40 Rotella all year long and it works just fine for me.
5w40 rotella synthetic. Helps in the cold.
For Nova Scotia winters and summers you'll want a diesel-rated (CJ-4 or better) synthetic 5W40.
Shell Rotella T 5W40 full synthetic in the big blue jug is perfect... often found at Canadian Tire on sale.

Synthetic really make a huge difference in the cold. The engine will crank much faster. It protects better too. I like Mobil Delvac-1 full synthetic - it has the CD-4 rating and can be used with indefinite oil change interval with proper filter changes and oil analysis. I went 100,000 miles a change on a couple of power strokes. The lab always showed my oil within spec. The filter was deep with 2 quarts each change, so the 16 total quarts got 1/8 changes every 7,000 miles.

Do you notice any extra oil consumption with the synthetic compared to 15-40 Rotella. I'd like to try synthetic if it doesn't use any extra or much. I've got about 9,000 on my new T/D now and it uses about a quart and a half in 3,000 mi. all of which are 70-75 mph interstate and pulling 4 mountains a day which seems normal on these to me consumptionwise. I'd just hate to see it drasticly increase while costing more also.
