White Smoke !!
« on: September 13, 2009, 09:23:35 pm »
So I just did a 1.9 AAZ swap in my mK2 and it was running ok.
Had it up on two wheels sideways to work on the exhaust.
Went to start the car and tons of white smoke comes out!
I also tightened a fuel fitting on top of one of the injectors.
would either of these cause the car to smoke???
It is still smoking now it is back on four wheels...

The other thing might be that the cold start lever might not be in the right place.

When you look down on it should it be all the way down as far as it can go??

With the cold start pushed in it should be down all the way it can go. A small bit of play is ok.

Does the car run rough or anything? Does it clean up eventually?

Yeah it runs pretty bad, almost like it has a miss.
Not to sure if it cleans up I have only ran it for like 10 minuets.
To depressing to watch it keep on smoking lol

I drove it earlier that day without all the smoke weird...

Can you ruin a injector by over tightening the top fuel union?

loosen the top union nuts on each injector until you find the injector thats missing or not working right.

How long was it on its side for and at what angle?

You can't ruin an injector by overtightening the line but you can ruin the line by doing that.

It was on the passenger wheels for about 4 hours, it was probably around 45 deg.

I wonder if I wrecked one of the lines. The line on injector one would not come loose it started to bend the pipe so I stopped trying to loosen it.

Loosen it at the pump then, not at the injector

Well I finally got to work on this again today, when I loosened the lines on each injector they all ran crappy so I don't think the problem is the injectors. I did notice that the smoke clears up a bit as it warms up but never completely stops. I noticed to that if I push the cold start lever all the way down on the pump it runs like crap and smokes more when I push it all the way up like when it is pulled for cold start it runs better and smokes less...

I also noticed there is tuns of air coming threw the in line, looked for a leak but couldn't find one, guess I will look a little closer tomorrow

Anybody have any thoughts?

Another place might be the fuel accumulator thing under the car, not to sure what it is called. My glow plug light keeps flashing like I have water in the system but if I drain it it is still there, I noticed my donor MK3 didn't have one, Can I just delete that?

Would air in the fuel lines cause the car to run like crap @ idle?

I drove it today and am so happy with the performance, it has way more power then my 1,6 NA, it even pulls hard in 5th gear :)

Yep. You need to stop the air leak.

Yes you can delete it, I did on mine.  Just pull the hoses off, unbolt the water separator from the frame and cut the wires.  Cap/tape the ends of the wires sepeately and use a piece of tube to hook the fuel line back together.

My water in fuel light (glow plug) used to flash a lot and it never had any water in it.  After I dropped it I opened it up and there was some sludge in there that I assume was causing the problem.

After you do this, install a new fuel filter with a water drain on the bottom and periodically drain or replace the filter.

I just went though the {leaking air into the system thing} and I can't recomend enough to have a good clear line on the pump so you can keep an eye on whats going on with the fuel going in.  Mine ran perfect but got hard to start and had me thinking everything under the sun about other possible causes.  VW evidently knew this way back then ;)

I am going to see if I can find another water accumulator unit before I delete it, I poked at it today and there definitely is leaking...I think  ???. There was a bit of diesel on it but I did try to drain it yesterday. I have the clear lines and the amount of air bubbles is crazy, there is a real bad leak somewhere.

Hope I find it really missing my Diesel with all of its new power. I am stuck driving my MK1 rocco in the meantime  :P

Where did you find your leak was?
