Is there an easy way to remove the 1.6 N/A airbox?

there are 4 or 6 bolts underneath that hold the metal and plastic parts together. I believe it's possible to do in place, however you may need a long extendtion to reach them

I've never seen anything other than the 4 snap spring things that hold the cover on, at least the ones down here in the states anyways.

Then yes you will have to remove the intake manifold, that is what the whole aluminum part is called.  It's all one peice after the air filter box is off held on by 6 - 6m/m allen heads on the back between the exhaust manifold bolts and one hanger brace right in the middle on the outside.  Probably easier using some 1/4 in stuff back there, they're not hard to get out but they are nerve racking to get the bit in and make sure it's fully seated so you don't round it out.  Don't put it back on without that little brace thing either, the whole damn thing can come loose without it.  I had that hapen on my N/A some years back.  I kept hearing this tinking sound every couple minuets on the way home, {the bolts were falling out 1 at a time}, then at a red light I noticed the engine sounded a lot louder but ran fine.  When I got home the intake was clear off the head  about a half inch or so away.  Can you tell me another car that will run without the intake manifold on it?

On the mkII's the intake manifold is like half aluminum and half plastic. It looks like the plastic part would come off separately but I'm only speaking from looking at them in the junkyard.
