Does anyone know how to stop that god forsaken alternator belt squeal? I have changed the belt, would a new pulley stop it?
Check the fan blades behind the pulley for the alternator. If the pulley is not all the way tight it can cause the blades to make a squealing noise. They will try not to spin with the pulley causing the noise. Thats assuming that the belt is good and tight.
It only does it when I first start it up or when I turn on the AC. If I go out and watch it when its squealing the alternator is spinning slower than the belt is causing it to squeal. If I rev it up to 2000 it will usually go away.
The pulley is nice and tight, I tried using belt dressing and that didn't do anything.
I am constantly fighting it too

It only happens to me when I put on the A/C and start out from idle. I wish there was a way to put a tensioner pulley in between the pulleys. I just have to keep the belt pretty tight and use belt dressing. If anyone has a better answer to this, let me know. I think that an A/C is just a big drain on this little motor, even though I need it here in the south.
Both my cars are doing it and have done it since I've had them. The only thing I can think of is a new pulley. All my belts are new.
try roughing up the inner edges of the pulleys, if theyve had slipping belts then they may have "glazed", use some wet and dry paper or emery cloth and scuff up the faces, see if that helps.
My beetle used to do the same thing, and a good sanding helped a huge deal
I fixed mine on my MK2 by replacing that geared bolt that is supposed to act as a gear or some crap to just a straight bolt and nut with washers. Get someone to pull up really hard on the Alt (or do that with 1 hand and wrench on the other if you can hold the nut still somehow and wrench the bolt at the same time) and torque that ***-muscle down. Needs re-doing periodically but it got rid of that insane screaming sound when ever it rained.
