Engine noise & other questions
« on: September 11, 2009, 12:49:26 pm »
I'm still relatively new to the VW Derv's and still trying to decide if the clappety sound is my waste gate or tappets.

While idling the clappety sound is there, when I press the clutch the sound quietens and also quietens while changing gear and the clutch is press down and speeds up while accelerating. My last MK2 (1.6 gasser) had tappet noise, but it was not as loud/bad as the sound I get on the GTD, so I'm purely guessing that it's the waste gate.

When people say wiring the wastegate shut, does that just mean weld it shut and is it safe to do on an otherwise unmodified engine?

if you put the clutch in and it goes away, think transmission... not lifters or "tappets" as you guys call them across the pond. you could check valve clearances also if you wanted tho, could never hurt.

and usually, un hooking the wastegate will only make turbo failure come sooner rather than later. make or buy a boost controller. they are adjustible, anstill let the wastegate work, but the wastegate opens at a much higher pressure. witch is a way better option than just un hooking or welding the wastegate closed.

Well it sounds like the lifters but very tappety if you like, but when I floor the clutch it quietens down, would the lifters do this? I'm guessing they could because there is less load on the engine, but same goes for the wastegate...

I guess I'll have to record the sound to get a better diagnosis  ;D

no dude, im telling you that its something in the clutch or trans if you put the clutch in and it goes away. lifters tick no matter what. they dont care if your foot is on the clutch or gas or brake. lifters dont tick on diesel engines unless they are REALLY FAR FROM ADJUSTMENT. and i have never heard of a wastegate rattling. they are spring loaded and have bushings. how would pushing the clutch in have anything to do with stuff going on in the head. the lifters are in the head. the clutch is on the end of the engine. there is no direct mechanical connection between the lifters and putting the clutch in. check your throw out bearing. check your transmission oil, see how bad it looks, and change it if it doesnt look brand new. look for metal in it. let the engine idle in neutral, stick your head down close to the engine, try and track down the source of the sound. more rather than just "there is a sound coming from my engine" actually listen around a bit. listen to the injection pump, listen to the top end of the engine, stick your head down by the oil pan and listen to the bottom end of the engine and the trans. especially listen to the trans. might be your cluprit. might be making bearing or gear noise.

I agree with Rabbit once again. I think your noise is more trans/ clutch related.

However the noise could be coming from injectors/ Injection pump, making less noise once clutch is pushed would be because the engine isn't working as hard to idle (see transmission problem once again).

Do what Rabbit suggested and listed for where exactly the noise is coming from...
Be very specific so we can help better.

Been a bit slack in checking where the noise comes from, but today I floored the clutch & applied the rev's, the sound is still there with the clutch disengaged so surely this means it's not the tranny?  ???

I may need to replace the clutch soon as it's slipped a few times while thrashing and changing gears quickly (read: dropping clutch @ redline) I'll wait till it pops then change it.

might be the throw out bearing. or your thrust bearing! that would suck...

Get a piece of 3/4" heater hose about 2 or 3 feet long.  Get someone to sit in the driver seat and start the engine.  Have the person in the drivers seat do whatever is necessary to make your noise, push in the clutch, whatever.

Take one end of the hose and put it to your ear and take the other end and put it very close to the area where you think your noise is coming from.  Also, try other areas around the engine just in case.

This may help you pin point which componet is making the noise.

im putting my money on it being the "thrust bearing", mines done the same on 3 boxes now, its not too difficult to do,but youd be better reading this first
