Nitrous, what does it take?

ok, so i recently got a nos system given to me. i want to run it on my diesel to aid the turbo. what am i gonna need to use it? head studs and metal/copper gasket im assuming? im not gonna use much, just enough to lite the turbo a little faster. oh yea, this is going onto my new rabbit. 12mm 1.6 CS code van engine. good shape, runs well. that engine is going to be running my spare K24.

only reason im asking about this, is because nothing came up in the search, well, no juicy info atleast.

should not require anything special really to run it, except some way of indexing fueling to increase with the addition of the nitrous.

because a diesel does not care about lean conditions there is little risk involved, and all that will happen if you dont index the fuel well is you will either waste nitrous(by not burning it completely with extra fuel) or you waste fuel and blow some smoke.

im not too worried about it tho, its just gonna be to lite the turbo, not for sustained use. just a shot off the line, maybe a shot into second if it needs it, then let the turbo take over.

I plan on running a small shot of nitrous on my 1.6 td as well. From what i've been reading about it, as truckinwagen stated you need the extra fuel to take full advantage of the nitrous. I only want to spray at wot, so turning in the fuel screw should give me extra fuel there. Also the nitrous should drop the air temp, which should lower egt's while boosting. I'm going to set my system up with a micro-switch on the throttle lever so it only sprays at wot. My son just bought a complete refilling station so i can get bottles filled pretty cheap.

Nitros need when you want serious power,not somethink like 120hp..more or less 300+hp.i dont need nitro very long time but my engine is not so powerfull,maybe you have better engine

im only going to be using the nitrous when there is smoke, right off the line. and my car only smokes until it hits boost.

im really doing this as an experiment. i got a FREE nitrous setup with a full tank of lol.. not like im about to go out and waste money on it to figure out that my engine cant benefit from it. no big deal that way.

That last video was pretty interesting.  Never new there was such gain with nos.  What's it like on the engine internals?

its nice to them, comparatively.

it cools the intake charge and EGT's, adds power without big increases in cylinder pressure(because its not boost) etc...

Running nitrous at too low of an rpm has bad effects on rods and pistons. It will almost double your exhaust output, it will cool off cylinder temps but it adds a lot of cylinder pressure. Worst case is bent rods, holes in pistons, and a window in your block. Nitrous is crazy fun stuff, easy to get out of hand with it.

first off, im not going to be going big. i honestly hate nitrous. would NEVER go out and buy it, thats for sure. its always closed or empty when you need it most. turbos have got my back, they dont let me down when im in need of more power.

i understand nitrous can turn your rods into pretzels at low revs. and burn holes in pistons. and break rings and pistons. and blow head gaskets. i just dealt with a stock digi 1.8 engine that got nos'd to death. head gasket was shot and #4 cyl has broken rings and ring lands. scored cylinder too. pretty sure it was nice to the rods tho. this is the reason im getting a free nos setup, the kid i got it from has no idea how to use it, not like i do either, but im gonna make sure i know atleast SOMETHING about it before i go bolting it on my diesel and blowing the head off when i hit the button. haha.

i started this thread so i wouldnt end up like my friend. he had a kinda expensive lesson to learn.

you have to be very careful with nitrous on a gasser motor, as lean conditions kill them fast.

thats probably what did in the gasser you looked at, improper fueling for the nitrous.
on a diesel lean is meaningless, so you dont need to be so careful. the only reason that it is dangerous to rods down low, is the same that makes boost down low dangerous, too much power for the rods to handle.

short of that you would have to work really hard to hurt a diesel with nitrous.

Nitrous is good for diesels. The main danger is over fueling which the nitrous takes care of. No smoke means a happy diesel.

Is this going on your 1.5? If so thats a rev happy motor in the first place. With nitrous you'll be able to rev to the moon without having to run insane boost levels to compensate for volumetric inefficiency.
Also your boost aneroid won't measure any more boost down low so the low end torque scariness is basically avoided, especially with a WOT switch or an EGT activated NOS controller.
Really the only things to worry about is the tranny/clutch and traction.

As far as filling is concerned just go to one of the major suppliers of industrial gasses and set up an account with them. It will be cheap.
