Tailpipe fell off today!
« on: September 27, 2005, 05:22:12 pm »
As a result I pulled the rotten muffler and replaced it with 18" of exhaust pipe, and put the tailpipe back on. (local garage is a buddy of mine and has a bender/expander). There's already no resonator on this car, so my exhaust is now straight through. Not loud at all! Seems to have more "oomph" now, and I can hear a little more turbo, but it's not a lot. Highly recommended! (Thought I'd try it after all I've read here).

One good thing it to mention that you have a TD.. if you take all the mufflers away from a normal diesel you be a 'bit' louder than with mufflers ;)

Partly due to the fact that the turbo is considered a 'muffling' device :)

I heard its bad if the turbo has no back pressure though.   Is this true?

The turbo does not need backpressure on the exhaust side... the better flowing exhaust the faster it will spool.

The turbo needs a certain amount of backpressure on the intakeside, else it would overspin and die, too much and it will surge.

I knew that turbo's make pretty good muffler's at least in theory. Car isn't loud by any stretch of the imagination, there is just a hair more turbo whistle, but not near as much as a garrett on a 1.6 with full factory exhaust. BTW this car is a 92 Jetta with a 1.9 idi TD.Very happy with the car. When the exhaust is history, it WILL be upsized to probably 2 1/2", but I'm leaving what's there alone for now. Haven't touched the fueling or boost, although it may have been toyed with before I got it. Seal is still there on max fuel screw. Not touching fuel until I install a pyrometer and boost guage! Had some "catastrophic failures" on other stuff in the past!

the turbo on your 1.9TD AAZ is a KKK K14 or Garrett T2, those are much smaller than the 1.6TD's Garrett T3 or KKK K24...

I've got a KKK K24 on my 1.9TD with 70mm downpipe (gonna weld a 60mm exhaust next week) it whistles loudly every time I have fun
