1.6 NA to AAZ swap questions
« on: September 03, 2009, 01:38:18 pm »
Ok I have gone through the search for a few days and haven't found any concrete answers to my questions.

So forgive me for this being a Noobish question  :-[

I have a '85 Jetta NA 1.6 it is starting to smoke pretty bad, so I have come across an opportunity to purchase a '93 Golf AAZ 1.9TD.
My question is what will I need to do the swap, this is my daily and I need it back on the road pronto.

I know if I do the tranny the axel diameter is 100 mm on the MK3 so I might just leave the MK2.

My real concern is the exhaust system.
Can I use the MK2 down pipe?
Can I hack the MK3 exhaust to fit on the MK2, at least the fire wall bend part?

What else will be an issue with this swap?

Thanks,
Mike

I've got a Mk III with an Mk II motor and turbo in it, but the Mk III downpipe (as far as I can tell anyways) - seems to fit just fine.  That would probably imply the opposite would also be true.

It depends on what turbo the 1.9 has on it. If it is anything but the K03 then you can purchase a mk2 TD upper downpipe and it will all bolt together. If you do have the K03 then your best bet would be to have the exhaust modified to fit the downpipe. I would cut the flange off the MK3 cat and weld that to your existing exhaust.

Do you have power steering?

Hey tyler, I probably should have just called and bugged you with questions lol.
Nope no power steering, how does that effect things?
I picked it up tonight so it is a go!
It is a 93 so not to sure what turbo it is till I pull it out.
Kind of thinking I should try to use as much of the MK3 exhaust as I can, it is bigger I believe.

Give me a call Mike, I have some goodies you can have :)

As for the power steering, it's not a direct bolt on so you would have had to do a bit oof fiddling to get it to work

So I have just about finished this swap, for anyone looking for the same info I was here is what I found.
The axles from the MK3 won't fit on a MK2 tranny the are 100mm and to long, I need to get the MK2 16v axles to work, I might do that in the future but for the moment just used my old 1.6 tranny. The clutch splines are the same so they just mate up.
The MK3 down pipe fits just fine so I used that on the MK2. besides that it's pretty much just wired up, easy swap  :)
I'm gonna see if I can make the rest of the MK3 exhaust fit. I will post some pics.
Oh and thanks so much to Tyler (Burn your Money) very helpful!!!

you should be able to swap the output flanges from your mk2 gearbox onto the mk3 tranny (you can with mk1s anyway!)

make a new downpipe, the mk3 one is poop!  :-\
