Oil Pans

couple of questions on oil pans,

I have a 1.9TDI currently and want to swap it into a geo tracker. from what I understand this requires a modified oil pan and pickup tube. I was curious if the pans were interchangeble from a 1.6/1.5 to a 1.9 (older 1.9 block as i run all the 1.6 accesories)

if you need a modified oil pan, a 1.5 or 1.6 pan certainly wouldnt fit the build. i think it needs to be modified because of the location of the 3rd member for the front end being that it has independent. and has a driveline going to it. it probably needs to look more like a chevy truck or toyota 22r oil pan, not like a VW car oil pan. or, when in doubt, look at how the pan off the stock 1.6 is shaped, and go off that.

I am going to buy the kit from Acme minus the oil pan and pickup/oil pump. I was thinking about doing an all new oil pan but the more I think about it I think that I am going to take the 1.9 pan that I have and flip it around (cut it an inch or two below the flange and then flip and reweld/patch in) since its an odd pan and is much like a small block chevy pan only the sump is located at the front of the engine on my pan. I have never seen one like it. or I will start with a 1.6 pan and modify it accordingly since i have one for the 1.6 that i am going to rebuild for the caddy and could use as a mockup piece before I perform the actual engine swap.

still up in the air on what to do with everything, I just know that I am picking up the Tracker on Friday

I have spoken with Jeff of Acme and I think that I am going to buy the basic kit and build my own engine mounts as well as oil pan. if its to much hassle I can go back and purchase the engine mounts from Acme. but since I have a 1.6 block that I can use for mockup and the existing 1.6 tracker engine and mounts I dont think that it will be to bad to weld everything up.

Jeff has been very helpfull and emailed me a picture of the tracker/vw oil pan. the pickup tube will be an easy modification.

I am very excited about the kit from Acme and getting a little 4wd diesel. I will be picking up a 97 4 door Friday and hopefully get everything done before bow season (october)

You might want to consider a Passat 20V oil pan from an AEB as these have the sump in the front and at the flywheel end there the pan is very shallow.

I agree with you andrew, also i have a question, what are your plans for the starter. have you had much expirience or talked with anyone to see how necessary the high torque starter is that Acme offers?

Although the cast aluminum oil pan is fancy, the longitudinal stamped steel pan I have pictured above on the left and the pan that is on his engine have the same basic shape and layout except the cast pan would be more expensive, harder to find and harder to re-shape/modify if necessary.

I am unable to see any pics in this thread other then the one I posted (its not blocked where I'm at) But the aluminum pan is easy to find as all of the mk1, mk2, mk3 and corrado people that swap AEB 20Vs into their cars end up swapping to a steel pan for additional ground clearance.

the biggest problem with my pan is that the sump is on the wrong side of the engine for the tracker swap

I see on the Acme webpage that there is a high torque starter for $160 or 165, I might email some people and see what they have done.

I will be putting together a document of pictures shortly to pu on Car domain what I have done so far and continue to do. i will have the basic tracker kit on saturday from Acme. I finished mounting up my accessories last night and we will see sunday how well everything fits in the engine compartment but I am using the tracker's alternator, powersteering pump and AC compressor. everything will be driven by a single serpentine belt of about 56.5" long.

next week I will be modding my oil pan and fabricating the engine mounts before pulling the TDI and putting it in the Tracker for good.

I was going to buy the whole kit but the breakdown in price was something like this
basic kit $425 (enough to bolt the engine to the trans with flywheel included)
Delux kit $895, basic kit plus engine mounts ($145) oil pan kit with oil pump and pickup ($300), throttle cable, oil filter housing (for a 1.6 not 1.9) alternator bracket ($35)

so the delux kit is good for the money but I figured since I would be making my own brackets for the powersteering pump that I might as well make the alternator bracket. and I am cheap on top of it and its no big hurry so i figured what the heck I will save myself the money and invest my time to fab this thing up. I am guessing  that I have about 4 hours into all of the brackets and pulleys making sure that I have the pulleys straight was the biggest challenge. the powersteering bracket I am using the upper left bolt of the water pump, lower right and then the left bolt of the crankcase breather for 3 solid points to hold the power steering pump and then i will use the injection pump support bracket to hold the AC pumps tension adjusting bracket.

for the alternator bracket I drilled out the stock one and ground a little off to reuse it and made a bracket that would strengthen it and locate it in the two most right holes on the back of the engine block.

like I said when I get pictures it will all make sense. its not the prettiest stuff in the world but it will do the trick just fine. its what you get with limited tools
