Rear Spring Questions Can I use two springs on one shock??

I bought some springs on Vortex that were supposed to be off of a 92 GTI. They are shorter than my original stock springs on my 86 Golf. They appear to be the same diameter. I bought them hoping that they would be stiffer than stock springs since they were off a newer GTI. All it looks like they will do is ride a small amount lower.

Is it possible to use both springs at once?? They fit inside each other, the spring mount has a ridge that the second spring kinda fits into. Is is possible to tie them together in some way?  I know this is probably a stupid question but it has never stopped me before I'm thinking that they would give less than one spring by itself.

I've heard of people winding them together before. The only problems I see is that the spring rate will be insanely high and you won't have a lot of travel before the springs "collapse" on one another.

What's wrong with hockey pucks? They don't raise the car, only increase the spring tension for a given height... so I guess they do raise the car...

I like the hockey puck idea, but I don't understand how to do it I saw the pic, but I really couldn't make it out. Do you drill a hole just big enough for the rod? Does the narrow end of the spring fit against it? The hard part will be finding a hockey puck in South Carolina LOL
I see what you are saying about the two springs binding each other. How do they get helper springs to work?

I have to admit, I HAVE done the two rear springs thing in the past.  Wind a pair of SHORTENED ones together, weld at the ends (and, I think we were securing to the spring seats as well).  It is not an "insanely high" spring rate, but adequate.  However, you DO need a lot more shock absorber damping to handle them.  Seems a lot simpler today when you can buy this stuff for peanunts just to spring (sorry for the pun) for a used set on the 'tex or something.
