GLow plug issues
«

Hi everyone,
I have done several searches but still need some help. My glowplugs are not working, and it looks like the relay. The fuseable link was blown, and I replaced it, but still no luck.
I tested, and the power does not seem to be reaching the the fuseable link. (50amp). BTW. The interior glowplug light is coming on as it should.
I am thinking the next place to check is the relay, but I cannot find it. On this board I found the pinouts for the relay, and have actually removed and checked every relay attached above the fuse panel - but did not find the right one.
The car is a 1994 VW Golf, IDI TD. The Canadian version... any help finding this and the replacement part would be appreciated.

I *believe* the glow plug relay is in the #12 socket on your fuse/relay panel...

Wait a sec, you're saying power is reaching the big 50A fuse on the firewall?
If you're getting power there then your relay is fine. Are you getting power at the glow plug bus bar?

sorry - edited.
There is no power reaching the fusable link. The interior light is working though.

I pulled out the relay in position 12, it does not really match the pinouts I have seen on the board though.
It has 4 leads - 2 copper, 2 silver.
It has 104 stamped on the top, listed as part number 357 911 253A. Is this the right one?
Internet searches turn up results saying this might be the fuel pump relay. I also can't seem to find a replacement part either.

You have an MK3 chassis with an AAZ engine, so the glow plug system is a bit different then what most of the documentation on this board talks about.
The MK3 chassis uses an "Engine Management Module" (big black square on the upper right hand side of the fuse block, usually stamped with a white "136") to control the actual glow plug relay... which is a small square relay with two copper pins and two silver pins in the same slot as the fuel pump relay on gasser chassis... probably the relay you've pulled.
Some MK3 configurations also have a glow plug fuse mounted on the top of the fuse block itself... big sucker, usually in a pink plastic body... might be worth a look.
Otherwise it's pretty tough to troubleshoot the actual control module other than to swap out a known good one... many many pins and no easy access.

So If I read that right - I have pulled the proper glow plug relay, but in fact, another one - labeled 136 actually controls the glow plug relay - meaning it may not be an issue with the relay I am looked at (but could be)
