Howdy Gang,
This 6 cylinder Volvo Penta diesel has a supercharger and turbo.
It smokes black when under a load.
The supercharger has a automatic switch that was bypassed to a manual on the boats dash.
It clears up or doesn't smoke when the supercharger is on but if left on it blows the circuit breaker.
Looks like somebody was messing with some of the adjustment screws on the fuel pump-
Where to get the pump checked over( in British Columbia) and where to buy the repair manuals?
thanks

those chargers are only supposed to be engaged between 1500 and 2600 rpms... its just an aid to spool the turbo. its not for continuious use, just intermittent. the pumps are the same adjustment procedure as the VW based pumps. i worked on tons of these things up in AK, and they are super simple to tune. just back the max fuel screw out if it smokes too much. our diesels would top out at 3600 rpms and make no smoke at all, just a bit at start up.

Thanks for the reply rabbit on roids
good info on the RPM that the supercharger works at
we just ordered a CD version of the factory repair manual as a paper book wasn't offered

you will need the book, the volvo engines are super picky. that box of electronics there above the fuel pump is the s/c brain basically. it takes a reading off the sensor in front of the injection pump. or did someone remove the box when they wired the supercharger for continuous use?

I'm still waiting for the CD I hope it is a factory copy of the workshop manual.
Another question
The alternator was replaced and now the tach doesn't jive is there any place to make any settings to calibrate it.
we have a snap on digital IF handheld tach.
thanks

the W signal off the tach should always be the same even on different alternators. i replace hundreds of volvo alternators every season, thats probably the #1 problem on these engines. and i never had to re-cal a tach on any of them. EVER. i bet your alt is probably sending out a funky signal.

Kevin,
We received a copy of the factory workshop manual on CD.
Tracing and testing the components we found the RPM relay (in the box above the fuel pump) was not working.
Or so it seems as all the rest of the parts checked out. This might be why they bypassed some parts with a switch on the dash.
So I'll order one.
Still the tach reads way off
at idle (650rpm) it shows 2000
the alternator charges OK
any idea what to try
thanks

yea, i really dont know what the problem would be with the tach. might be something in the alt, could even be the tach its self...
