5th gear in car swap who has done it?
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:05:12 pm »
I searched the forum and didnt see anything about anyone trying to swap 5th in the car. I think it could be done as long as the gears are not stuck and need a puller to remove them.

I junked the differential in my 84 jetta td awhile back and got a awy trans from a fellow vwdiesel.net member and then got ahold of brokevw.com and bought the new bolt, snap ring, and gasket to replace 5th. My old trans had a .71 5th that i think will be perfect for the long trips down the road and will keep the rpms down and my mileage up.

So who has tried to swap gears in the car and did you have success???

Swapped a .75 in to my 9A close ratio trans and it went flawless. If you've read brokevw"s site and kinda understand it you"ll be ok. He makes it sound a little harder than it was/is. My gear was tight but didn"t need a puller. I did it when i had the trans out of the car. Don"t think having it in would make it much worse.

yea i have already pulled the .71 out with the trans on the floor and once i read the directions with the trans in front of me (walking from the garage to the house to read on the computer is not a good idea thats why theres a print button) it was a piece of cake and came right off. I do need a better set of snap ring plyers mine managed to jump out of my hand and stab me in the thumb packing the whole with grease and gear oil and causing it to get infected (not fun)

Ill let you know how it goes but would still like to know if anyone else has done it and if they have any tips

hate to say this, but check on VWVortex. I'm sure lots of people there have swapped their 5th gear.

There was nothing other than having the correct pair of snap ring pliers. If you have already taken the .71 off than you know what to expect. I wish i could change other gears just as easy.
