Newbie to forums, the IDI VW, and some questions Too!

Hey everyone. Im new to these Jetta IDI's just picked up a 89' Jetta 1.6L TD with 350,000Km  on it. Runs great, little to no blow by on it wich I found great. Did all the basic stuff so far, cut the exaust off and running a straight pipe, Turned the fuel screw all the way in , and a cold air intake. I wanted to ask how do I complete close off the wastegate? That would be my next Mod!


I Was also reading on some things that you guys are doing to your set ups. Some were talking about added coolers for the turbos and such. Do you really think its nessacery to do this? I mean I Own a 04 ram 3500 with a 5.9 Cummins that I use everyday for hauling 20,000 Lbs + and never would thought of doing something like this. Wouldent the Logical Idea be to just "Let of" And drop your EGT's?  That was just a Newbie rant I guess..


I was also Wondering about Injectors. Can You get bigger injectors and run it off a stock TD Pump with the fuel screw turned up? Would I be over fueling the motor with the stock turbo or would I maybe get some gains?

Also the coolers they are talking of are after coolers probably. For circulation after shutting the engine off. EGT's are usually controlled with right foot, and the main fuel screw for most purposes. There are things you can do, but watch out on how hot you get it. 2.5 or 3" downpipe helps a ton to lower EGT and get a quicker spool. Take a look at that FAQ and see if it doesn't answer most of your ?s

Your cummapart has the cooler on it. it's The intercooler that everyone is talkin about.

I wasent thinking about an Intercooler, But lets dissregard that comment I made.

I dident see anything on the FAQ about wastegate blocking. Can someone explain to me how This is done?

I was also reading on the fuel screw. The coller needs to be removed Correct?

For wastegate search "AAZ performance" there is a sticky with a great write up. Tell you all you want to know. You don't just close it off, but close too it. And there is a ton more than just cranking the fuel screw in.

How much for the 12V? Is it a rotary or inline pump? And thanks for the tips..


I've owned both cummins,powerstrokes and Duramax.. I can say I hate powerstrokes with a passion. I've had both 6.0L and 7.3L. when they ran good they were nice. But keeping them running was just the problem. I Would be Lucky to get a trouble free month with them. The Duramax was nice. Only problems Ive had with them was the Injectors at 200.000Km. Now my cummins. I baught it used as I wanted to stay in the  5.9 and not go to a 6.7 , I also liked the body style of mine the best. My trucks now at 750,000Km. Pulling boats,cars,trailers, and machinery daily with not a bolt touched on the engine. just a replaced tranny. the power is unreal it makes. I can hit a 8% grade pulling 15,000Lbs and all I do is get out of overdrive and it keeps pulling .
But enough talk about big powerhouses.



Im really enjoying this jetta. its great on fuel. Sounds like a cummins, And dose it ever Puff some coal! I Cant wait to try these other little mods later on today.

it's actually a stock cooler that is set up on the GTD 1.6. The GTD is a bit hotter TD and has an auxilliary coolant pump that is activated by a thermostat on top of the T2 turbo.  It activates the pump which flows coolant to the turbo and is useful to keep coolant flowing after shutdown so that the coolant doesn't boil inside the turbo.

I forget what pump is on it. but it's out of a '93 dodge. Price matters if it's with g360/205 or without. I need it out of my way. so it was maker offer.

if its out of a 93, then it has a VE rotary pump.

Well. I took the fuel pin out and removed that coller, then screwed it in Until I got the Idle at 1300RPM. WOW did that ever wake it up!! I must say Im having a blast with this Little diesel!

thats not cool, a 1300 rpm idle. they are supposed to run at 700 or so.

Hahah. But on a serious Note, The further you turn in the fuel screw the higher the idle is right?

yea, eventually the fuel screw becomes the idle setting screw as you turn it in.

How low can they idle? I mean if you turn that one screw that the throttle rests on.. is that the idle adjustment?
