Decent standard tyres Golf A2 or Mk2

What are your ideas for tyres for this side of the pond for Mk2 Golf, 185 R14 60H, The one aged Continental (made in Equador!) that is on the back really scared the hell out of me this morning in the wet, never been happy with them. Toyo Proxes seem to be my choice at the moment, as they grip well, unlike the hovercraft Conti's. Opinions please?

I don't know if you have them on that side of the water, but I really have been pleased with the toyo spectrum tire. It is a good all around tire. Makes it great around the dirt roads here and in the winter snow as well. I have had them up to 100mph and still smooth as glass. My favorite part is that they are cheap. I have had 2 sets on 2 different VWs and sold the cars before wearing them out. 10 out of 10 on my cheap/good/safe o meter.

The proxes are great road tires in mild climates, but when mother nature adds ice, snow sleet, or freezing rain they aren't up to par to keep you as safe as can be. I have burnt off 5 sets since my festiva 1.6bpt monster killer. I use Toyo observes in the winter. I don't believe in "all season" tires.

Agreed they are not the best in the snow, but it snows here as often as Beelzebub skates to work.

If the Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds are available over in the U.K. I would consider them.  I put a set on my '06 Golf TDI and the road noise was reduced by over half at 70MPH.  Their wet pavement performance has been outstanding (and we get a lot of rain here in Washington state) and the dry pavement performance has been equally great.  They also have pretty good snow and ice performance since we also got a lot of that last winter as well.  I put them on at 55K miles when the original Goodyear OEM tires were low on tread and currently have 115K miles on them and think I might get another 20K to 25K miles which is right in line with their treadware warranty of 80K miles.  When it's time to replace them I am definitely putting another set on them and also am going to put a set on my '91 Jetta TD when I put it on the road.

  The concept of tyres that grip and last longer than many cars is astonishing, Er are there ANY corners where you live? Over here our roads are usually as straight as a dogs guts. Not good for long life of tyres, or the unwary. If I get 20k a set, I'm doing well.

There are plenty of corners where I live and I take them pretty aggresively .  I've taken it over Snoqualmie pass, which is over 3000 feet, many times and there are some great curves on the highway that runs over it.

I drive pretty hard and put 120 miles a day on my car and am very happy with these Goodyear tires; they stick on dry and wet pavement and do pretty good in snow & ice.

ive got Proxes on the rear of my mk2 and they still step out in the damp, but i had Yokohama A539's put on the front and its very difficult for even me to slide it

 ive done a few trackdays and trips to the 'Pod on them too, and theyre still going strong, far better than the ditch-finders that were on before

Hmmmmm I can get those here. I've never had ditch finder tires, but once I had a set of ditch magnets on the truck, it was a rough ride.

I am currently using Kleber HP2 tyres (185/60r14) and they offer a good grip/endurance compromise... They were recommended to me by my ol' trusty mechanic (who had 4 or 5 mk2 gtd's), and I was quite surprised with them.

Despite the crazy camber in my car  , the wet (it's a rainy place this one), and all, I'm quite pleased with them.
