I've had a handful of customers that bought motors that came from this source that were "low mile" motors that were in fact in poor shape.  Some have had blown turbos, some with low compression across the board, wasted cylinders etc. As with any "used" I would suggest exercising caution.

if i am buying an engine, and paying a fair price for it, i either gotta hear it run, or pop the head off. if its a super good deal, or free, then i could care less. my audi was $250 bucks, and its low miles, but appearently it only takes 140k miles to wear out a 2.0TD

You gotta figure:
a) These are coming from junkers in Europe. They had to be junked for a reason, and I doubt 100% of them were in catastrophic crashes
b) Why would they ship the good motors to the US? The good ones are likely picked over.

if someone offered you more to send parts overseas you wouldn't send the crap over, the 1Y's are common enough over here and in europe to ship the odd few over without it making a difference anyway.

BUT these all have suspiciously low mileage!

If this is still the same guy, I bought a "70,000 mile, good used" 1.6 td motor from him. Worst thing I ever did. Motor was a completely abused, worn out (already on 2nd over-bore) piece of junk. Only thing on it that did not have to be rebuilt or replaced was the turbo. I believe that he buys all the motors at random from junkyards and says the same thing about them all without any actual knowledge.
