Volks,

I am converting a 72 camper to 1.6na from a 1986 Jetta.
Will a Diesel bell housing bolt up to my Aircooled trans and will the following ratio's work or should I buy the Diesel trans outright with the bell housing? I can buy either the whole trans or just the bell housing at this point.

Looks like the 72 Camper has the following ratios:

1st 3.8, 2nd 2.06, 3rd 1.26, 4rth .89, Ring and Pinion 4.125, 4rth overall 3.67

The 77 trans has the following ratios:
1st 3.79, 2nd 2.06, 3rd 1.26, 4rth .093, Ring and Pinion 3.875, 4rth overall 3.6

:o Wow, how slow can you go?

The diesel bellhousing will bolt right to your aircooled Bus transmission. Get some Permatex "Great Stuff" sealant to make sure it doesn't leak.

I can't really offer quality advice on your ratios... I'm fairly sure the Bus gears were lower than Vanagon. You may want to upgrade to 15" rims and taller tires to lower your revs a bit on the highway...you have the 112mm 5-bolt pattern the same as a Vanagon, right?

I already have 15" south african alloys ready to go on, so that is all set.

Hmm, I just read thru that build journal that someone linked to; the DV bellhouse/starter won't fit under the Bus tank... He used an adapter plate from KEP (Kennedy Engineered Products)
