When was my TDI engine built?
« on: August 17, 2009, 08:48:03 am »
Hi,

I have a camper van that has had a Mk3 golf 1.9 TDI engine conversion. My problem is whenever I try to buy parts I get asked the vehicle reg for the engine, which I have no way of finding out. I'd like to find the age of the engine and if it is a 'AAZ' or other code. The engine number is 028103373N and I was told it came from a Mk3 golf. Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Ian

PS. its really quick for a camper van!

Unfortunately the MK3 was a transition chassis for VW and they used several different types of engines, and it varied between North America and Europe as well.  My parts catalog doesn't find that particular block part number.

If you have a throttle cable it's an IDI engine, probably an AAZ.... if the throttle is fully electronic it's probably an early version of the TDI engine (perhaps an AHU).  There;s a description of IDI and TDI in the FAQ which may help as well.

Best bet is to post a couple pictures of the top of the engine and we'll be able to tell for sure.

That number you posted is not the engine number. Its probably just a casting number and there's not much we can glean from that  ;)

The engine number is stamped on to a flat just below the head and just above the oil cooler housing. It will be a two or three digit code and six numbers. As Vincent said if it's got a throttle cable it will be an AAZ. If it hasn't it will be a 1Z (93-95) or AHU (96-98). If you can find the code we can give you a year in the middle of the run so you stand a good chance of getting the right bits  :)

problem is even that it is a 1Z, there were two main generations, I thing they change about 275000

the code is right below the head, over the oilfilter connections, usually under a lot of grime.
its like: 1Z 234900
