So I'm thinking 90-92 Jetta 1.6td

Whats everyone think of that?
1.6 seems to be the workhorse.
Does it take to mods as well as the 1.9?

Will it be able to tow my sea-doo?
At the very least its a good solid german built model, not like my lemon 93.

I have an 88...same engine. There seems to be every bit if not more tuneability with the 1.6td. The turbo is bigger, the LDA is better, etc. I range from 39-42 mpg right now with plenty of smoke (39 was in 100+ degree weather with all 4 windows down doing ~80 mph).

I have a 1v engine (1.6TD without the LDA) and average 40mpg on an engine with 295,000 miles.  Haven't done much tuning at this point, but I'm working on it.

i decided on the same motor for my workhorse.
i took the 1.6L TD motor from a 1990 Jetta and put it in a rabbit.
it has met all my expectations and continues to be a worthwhile investment.
i plan to squeeze some more power out of it, but as of right now it is stock... and i really have no complaints about speed... its peppy enough for what it is.
it will tow your seadoo behind a mkII no problem.
milage is another story. i have a leadfoot so my milage wont be an accurate representation. i'll tell you this though... driving the snot out of it i can't do any worse than 5.3 cents a km at $1.00/L.

When I was working at Dafasco, in Hamilton, I was driving back and forth everyday from Moonstone, in all it was 400Kms per day. In order to make it there, and back in under 2 hours, I would have to travel at 140Km/hr or more at times. I still was able to get 700Kms per tank on the average. I was beyond impressed. It has an ACH tranny in it. So the engine was just humming to say the least. Around 4500 RPM or so.

My 88TD has been topping 50mpg (US gallons) on a regular basis since the beginning of summer.  Latest figure was 53.7mpg.  It is rebuilt and so is the injection pump.  I haven't adjusted the pump though.  If you do that you can wreck the mileage (but get more power).
88 Jetta TD....sold for $1000, bought an 06 Cobalt, clearing out the diesel jetta stuff now

I rebuilt my 1V, had Giles do the pump mod and added the LDA to it, rebuilt the K14 turbo and just installed a 2.5" downpipe and full 2.5" exhaust and this last tank I got 50mpg 80% highway 20% city, and I have plenty of power and  boost maxes out at 12psi.  I have smoke at WOT but not to much, just right I think.  :D
