Need all new heavy duty suspension on a budget--recommendations?

86 golf with all original suspension. I'm looking for something that allows me to load it up without bottoming it out! Can't afford high-end stuff and was wondering if later model springs and struts work?

Are you talking about front or rear?

Not sure but maybe passat or later jetta springs will work.

Also moog makes stronger/variable rate springs, but depending on were you get 'em it could cost like 100$.

For the large list of springs hit control F and type in a spring part # and it'll go to it and you can look at the specs and get measurements. Hope this helps

The HD springs parts place are very nice! I'm currently running these on my 81' rabbit, and im very pleased! However they are very stiff and are a very good increase over stock but without swaybars there is a minor amount of body roll. but like i said they are great and you cant beat the price!

Thanks for the report on PartsPlace.  I was considering sourcing new springs/shocks/struts from them.  My Jetta's in desperate need, especially since I've got a 15 gallon WVO tank in the trunk.  I'm tired of the motorboat look.

Dang I looked into struts shocks and springs. Complete assemblies with shipping and core charges, plus me mailing back cores puts me way over $600
There has to be a better route

Parts place also sells just the springs for 95$. You can do way better than 600 for all that.

I "think" the HD springs from parts place are the same as the ones in the link I posted a while back.

Last I knew ebay had moog HD variable rates for your car for cheaper.

What about neuspeed sport springs for a MKIII says gives a 1.3" drop but maybe less on my car. I think they will fit on my car

In the pictures my car has a 1.6 na motor and tranny in the back. There is still some suspension travel. Not a whole lot but there is enough that it's a comfortable ride still.

In the second picture you can see the hockey puck. It's at the bottom of the spring sitting right on the spring perch. That guys been in there for a bit over a year and probably 30 000 kms, maybe more.

I'm running mk3 VR6 springs and struts. I bought them used off vortex for like $40 front and rear.

Go to the local wrecker and get a set of springs out of the back of a Passat. Mine are from a '93 foor door. I cut a coil and a 1/2 off to get the ride height down to reasonable (a littel high) and I can fill teh trunk with anything I want and still have some height. Other car has a pair of front springs out of a chevette in the back, same deal. Cost me 25 bucks at the wrecker. Take an old spring with you and a tape measure, find something slightly longer with a slightly thicker wire and try it! You migth be surprised.

Audi Cookie cutters. I plan on cleaning them up this winter while I have my snows on. I think they were from an Audi Coupe GT?

I finally got some springs from a VW VR6 and bought new sachs/boge shocks-struts, gonna see how it works out. I might go the hockey puck route if I need more ride height. Do I have to use a spring compressor? The back springs seem pretty easy to put on the shocks without one, but I haven't looked at the fronts yet.
