Resealed my pump.
« on: August 05, 2009, 10:31:33 pm »
I just installed the pump I resealed last night..... and so far no leaks. Honestly one of the easiest things I've done on my car, and only took me about a  hour and a half. Much easier than taking the dang thing out and re timing it (even though I've done it so many times by now I'm an expert ;) ). I would definitely recommend anyone with a leaky pump follow the instructions in the facts section, and do it yourself. Then you know its done right and will it will only cost you 30 bucks compared to 300 to 500 ;D.

Great feeling when you fire it up first time after a rebuild and knowing you did the work.
Also noone to blame if it goes wrong which is easier to take and you have the knowledge at least to rectify the problem...

Good idea defiantly a DIY project like I said. A couple suggestions from the peanut gallery.  Replace your glow plugs while you have the pump off the engine. I put new ones in and instead of having to crank the car for about  bit, it starts up right away. Also your taking off the top cover to replace that seal, mark the max fuel screw (if it doesn't still have it's collar) and turn it all the way out. It will make the cover much easier to take of and put back on. Anyway good luck, and again like I said  very easy, so good luck.

Lets not jump the gun here. There is a lot going on inside that pump and extreme care needs to be taken to avoid getting any dirt in it, or putting it together wrong. Also, if you don't get your settings just right you will decrease your mileage and power. Also, there are a lot of different styles of pumps and not all of them are as easy to work on as the others. I'm not saying you can't do it, just take your time and make sure you know what you are doing.

so your saying all 1.6 na pumps arn't created equal... and that following the directions provided in the Faqs section could not be safe? Because I have 5 of these pumps and they all look the same. And by following the directions in the Faqs It seemed that it was both easy and had very little margin for error. I personally didn't see a single place where I could have seriously messed up my pump. Any clarification would be appreciated as I plan on cleaning and resealing the pump I originally had a leek on.

What he is saying is BE CAREFUL!!

There are several things in there that can be screwed up during reassembly.

Dirt is your enemy here big time, I can's stress the importance of cleanliness enough when it comes to the internals of a pump.

Just be careful and go slow...

That sir is scary, or you're a super genius. One of the two :P

Some NAs have different features on them like light load retard or fast idle. Some have left hand threads where others have right hand. Also the plungers are very brittle and can easily be snapped. Plus they are so sensitive that if you handle them with your bare hands the acid on your hands can damage them. Not to mention that the settings on them are very precise.

Go slow, be clean and be careful. And if you mess them up send them up to Giles and me and we'll fix them for you :)
