any body got a "ram air" setup on their diesel
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:04:36 pm »
so with this crazy frikkin heat wave we're having, I'm trying to find a way to get some cooler air into my poor little mk1 diesel motor.  its in a mk2 jetta, and has the original mk1 airbox.  I can't tell if the guage in the cluster is right or not, but i don't want to find out the hard way.  It gets pretty close to the top of the guage (gas cluster remember) going up the big pass that is the ore/cali border.  It seems to run pretty steadily just under the light that blinks around halfway.  motor runs fine even when it goes up the pass and is close to the top of the guage.  I remember reading somewhere that the sender was different, but who knows at this point.  and just a little background, so we can narrow out some things.  last week, new water pump and thermostat (both working fine).  I think its just the weather, but anywho, any got a ram air setup they'd like to post pics up of? thanks in advance...some pics

I read a while back on this forum that the "ram" affect doesn't happen untill over 100mph, impossible with a NA ::). The thing to do is get cooler air into it. Some have taken the air from the rain tray since that's generally a high pressure area, others just take air from the very front of the engine compartment.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Wouldn't that be super loud if you are pulling air from the rain tray?

boy i would love to turbo it.  someday.  just looking for some (cheaper) cooler air right now.  gonna go downtown and see what I can find for some flex hose, and see what I can do.  I know the people in arizona and vegas are laughing, but we're goin on about two weeks of 100 plus.  which is kinda normal for july; heard is gonna be a chilly 99 this weekend.   :P

This is my old flat red rabbit...I don't think that anybody that said a ram air wouldn't help until after 100MPH ever had a VW N/A. This was the most amazing upgrade that I did. It helped more than the governor mod or my 2.25" exhaust. I did the exhaust before the others, but still. Before going across US 30 toward canton I was flat footed and any hill would take my speed down from 65-70 about 5 MPH. After I did this I had to watch how I held my foot, because first time across I was doing about 80 and didn't even realize it. This mod did make it louder though. I would definately do it for the benefit as it wasn't that much louder.

If it isn't in the thread it is all 3" schedule 40 PVC...and it will bend when heated from the valve cover.

All I did was extend the intake snorkel so that it takes air from behind the bumper..

Didnt noticed any power gains (laugh), but it does seem to run a little quieter...

heres a pic of what i did:

STacks on a Rabbit....  ;D

I did the same thing as Riceeatingrabbit did..   Except I wanted a larger inlet..   I cut the air box out and used some of that Permatex plastic weld to glue a 2.5" piece of of PVC in there.. Orignally I had a cone filter on the end and no filter in the box, but couldn't tell much of a difference other than I always had to clean the darned filter (road dirt).. I went back to a good ole cheapo paper filter now..

Can;t say that it does much for performance, but In the winter when temps stay below freezing I pull the tube to below the bumper off..  Warms up a bit better that way..  I also gotta remeber not to go splashing through big puddles..  No ignition to get wet is nice, but I'm guessing it wouldn;t be real happy getting a big gulp of water in the intake...

This is from the link above...I changed it some after that. I am telling you the faster you went the better it ran. It also was alot better in the rain. I put pantyhose in the pvc joints and an old door screen over the pipe comming out the grill and didn't have any filter issues.
