K24 Boost
« on: July 29, 2009, 06:12:15 am »
I have blocked off my wastegate completely on my K24 planning to run full boost using diesel to regulate. I run it pretty clean but I do get some haze at full throttle which as it comes on boost clears slightly but depending on the light I can still see some smoke.

Anyway my real issue is with the boost and the way it rises, now I don't have a rev counter but I will state revs to give an idea of what is happening. Unlike most turbos I am used to it will begin coming on proper boost around say 2500rpm at 15psi, then as the revs rise the boost progressively rises also until just before the governor it can show 21psi. This is on a 1.6 block and 1.9 head which has been ported extensively but running standard 1.6 manifold with intake and exhaust port matched.

My thoughts are that there may be a leak either on the wastegate or manifold/turbo flange? Is there a gasket for there as I couldn't find one in my parts system so just fitted without?

I was expecting much more boost than that, I tried upping fuelling more but I just got LOTS of smoke but boost never moved. She runs great when boost comes in so I would just like it all from lower.

Nature of the beast with that turbo. If you want boost sooner you need a different/smaller turbo. K14 off a 1.9 will fit, other than needing to make a new oil drain, and get your boost much sooner. Don't know how long it will last at high boost conditions though, it will be spinning too fast. Consensus seems to be that a vnt turbo is the best of both worlds, but I have no experience with them. More involved to install them.........

21 psi isnt enough for you? better throw one of those GT17's you have on there.

Nope  ;D

I think if I had 21psi right through the boost range it would be ok.  ;)

I am going to shock everyone here too, I have ran this boost non intercooled for 1000 miles now, I climb 350metres from sea level every day twice a day to and from work and she runs perfect. Getting some tubing this weekend to hook up my intercooler.  ;D If I hold full throttle in 5th labouring it too long the temps creep up but drop to 5th and lift back till around 15psi held and all is good.
