How do you tell the difference between 1.6TD and 1.9TD?
« on: September 19, 2005, 06:04:15 am »
Where to find engine numbers?
Any differences between the too which makes it easy to identify. Any pics would be handy!

What turbos came with what models?

Is the KKK24 a straight swap for the KKK14?

There is 2 TD's in the scrapyard near where i stay, one is a Passat the other a Mk3 Golf both CL's. Both the turbos look different but similar size.

This is a pic of my pump.

Both the Golf and the Passat have different pumps to mine.

Do i need to run this as i have see a few without it? I guess its the standard blow off valve (Dump valve).

The Passat in the Scrapyard runs the above aswell.

Both inlet pipes are facing the same as my 1.9TD.

The most visible difference is the valve cover. The 1.9 cover is held on by 3 bolts down the middle of the cover, the 1.6 has 8 bolts around the outside. The back of the block has 1.9D/TD in large cast letters and the engine number located on the block at the just below the large coolant spigot on the head will begin with "AAZ". All Mk3's are 1.9TD's

The K24 from the 1.6TD will bolt on to the manifold IF your car came with a K14 turbo. If your car came with a K03 turbo you will need to get the manifold from a 1.6TD or from a 1.9TD that came with the K14 or T2 turbo. You may also need the oil lines the downpipe and the intake hose, depending on which OEM turbo you have.

The "blow off" valve you pictured is actually the EGR valve. It dumps exhaust gas into the intake under certain conditions of speed/load to lower combustion chamber temperatures and prevent the formation of NOX. Only the passat is equipped with this, presumably the 1.9TD had trouble meeting NOX emissions standards when installed in the heavier passat. You can remove it and plate off the holes if you like.

I wonder if i have the KKK14 or the K03 turbo now. Will have a look at the plate on the side of the housing.
