Bad glow plug relay or did I short something else out?
« on: September 16, 2005, 12:55:09 am »
I posted this to vintagewatercooled but after reading some on their forums I discovered this was the place for diesels.

On my '80 rabbit diesel the red wire the goes to the run/stop solenoid broke off and shorted to ground. Now the glow plug light doesn't come on, nor does the car start although it cranks fine. If I put voltage to the solenoid the car will start and run fine as long as voltage is maintained. I don't get any voltage on the red wire. I checked the fuseable link and verified +12 volts at the glow plug relay. When this shorted did it kill the relay or is there a fuse some place?

I ordered a new relay and a manual tonight but I doubt they'll arrive for a few days. Is there anything else I should check? Is there another relay that handles run/stop or is it all done by the glow plug relay?

Thanks,

Randy

stop solenoid

I could be wrong but don't think the stop solenoid is fused.
Had to break out the Bentley. It shows it coming right off the ignition switch to the fusebox. Ignition connects to the fusebox at E2. If there is no power at E2 then there is no power coming from the switch.
With the ignition on;
Are the temp and fuel gauges working?
 Back up lights?
Got power on G3 of the fusebox?
I think the turn signals are supposed to run off the 15 circuit track (ignition on) too.
If none of these things are hot with the ignition on, you don't have power from the ignition switch.
 New switch.
If you have power at E2 with no power to any of the other stuff listed above, it could be a circuit inside the fusebox opened.

Temp, fuel gauge and reverse lights all work. I haven't figured out where to read E2, G3, etc on the fuse panel. I'll try pulling that out a bit where I can read it. As far as I can tell the only items that don't work is run/stop solenoid and the glow plug relay.

Both E2 and G3 have power. Where does the wire to the run/stop solenoid terminate? It's a red wire with a blue stripe. I have a red w/blue stripe at the ignition switch but it appears to be constant power.

The wire from the run/stop solenoid is Red w/black stripe. I must be color blind. Not blue like in my last port. It appears to terminate at C15 which doesn't have power.

Thanks fatmobile, it was a bad trace in the fuse panel. Replaced the fuse panel this morning and I'm back on the road.

Randy, where'd you get your fuse panel?  Mine's a bit rusty, and I suspect it to be the cause of many of my electrical problems - no blower, wipers, now no glo plugs -
