What is the plastic piece on the end of the aluminum intake on 1.6td

Anyone know what the plastic valve??? or whatever on the left side of a 1.6 td intake manifold??

I believe it is the blow off valve. It is unneeded and if you go to the FAQ section Giles is selling a BOV delete kit. If I am thinking what you are thinking of check it out he has pics over there.

Thanks, That's what I would have guessed. Mine has an adjustment screw in the center and I thought I might try cranking it in. Now I will make a blocking plate like the one in the thread.

I just screwed it all the way in on my T3 syncro, which all but blocked it off. All it is is a rubber flap with a spring on a screw at the other side to keep it closed. Turning the screw in stiffens the spring, and putting it all the way in keeps it closed.

those stupid blow off valves are the biggest waste of time ever. put a big cap on the outlet from it, or just get the removal kit. even if you screw the adjuster in, they still only get to about 15 psi before they open.. and you can put different springs in them, but its still a waste of time, cause once they open, there is only about 10-12 psi of boost available get to 15psi, WOOOOOSH, right back to 10psi. vw even realised that the valve was a waste of time and got rid of it on the later TD engines. crap, im not even sure if the eco engines had them, i dont think they did tho. BLOCK IT OFF, end of story.

I will block it off.  Drilling a fitting in the block off plate should be a good spot for a boost gage tap.Why would VW have both a waste gate and a dump valve? Don't they do the same thing?

Its not quite the same AFAIK. When the blow off valve opens, the turbo will stay spinning at full speed, whereas when the wastegate opens, it slows down. At least thats my understannding of it. I could be wrong though.

You are correct. I think VW calls it a turbo overboost protector.
