Headliner 3M Adhesives

Hey guys anyone use either 3M 8088 General Trim Adhesive or 3M 8090 Super Trim Adhesive when re-doing your headliner's? The 8088 is rated up to 160 degrees F. and is clear with less soak thru (worried that it won't handle the heat) and the 8090 is rated for higher temp's but is not suitable for spraying onto light weight foams, I have some nice foam backed headliner material. I currently am in possesion of two cans of each spray and need help deciding, the last thing I need is to have the whole thing fall down on the first 30+ degree day or wreck the material etc... with the other one. Thanks.

I used a 3M spray on type for my headliner, so far so good 1 1/2 later.

I don't know what number was on my cans. I would use the clear 160F, I guess the only way your gonna get hot enough to ruin it is in the sun, whatever I used is yellow colored and soaked through in some places but it's holding fine. Good luck

I used 3M headliner adhesive. I never put the headliner back in my car though...

I sell 3M adheasives and have had some training with them. The one that isn't foam safe make sure not to use, it will eat it almost completely. The other should be fine. I specifically asked the 3M rep what to use on headliners and he said depending on what your bonding he recommends these. 78 sensitive foams, 74 foam fast for non sensitive foams, 76 hi tack for quick one sided bonding repairs, 77 for general purpose-only good to 140 degrees, 94spray-best all around will bond about anything except sensitive foams and has a high temp rating, or High strength 90-it has a 200plus temperature rating and has the highest bond strength of anything in a can, it is pricey though. All of these are products sold in aerosol cans and will work well for a headliner per 3M recommendation.

Ok I did a little experiment with my infared thermometer. Its 30c degrees out today and I got a max temp of 60C. degrees when I aimed it at the headliner of a black vehicle sitting all day in the sun. A maximum hot day in BC could reach 39c. in some places. I have tried this a few times now and don't get more than 60c (although today is the hottest so far). I think that it kinda maxes out around that temp. because of evaporation and cooling of the car due to the breeze or whatever, on the dashboard however I have read over 80c. Ya the 3M Super Trim 8090 is 200F. rated or something and is yellow but apparently will soak through easily on lightweight fabrics. Both say right on the can they are designed for headliners but one for lightweight fabric and the other for heavyweight(3M8090). Well I think I will go for the 8088 all things considered and as a bonus I got it from work for free! I will return the 3M8090 to Lordco and get my fifty bucks back for the two cans. Thanks for the replies I will let you know what happens.
