info on the 1.2 liter TDI?
« on: September 14, 2005, 12:38:46 pm »
Does anyone out there have info on the 1.2 liter TDI?  I've got the peak horsepower, and peak torque specs, but am looking for torque/rpm curves, and grams/kWh vs RPM curves if possible.  By displacement and design they seem to be just 3/4's of a 1.6 TDI, but all the specs I find are for the 1.9TDI.  Do they even make a 1.6TDI?  Not in the US I know (but the 1.2 isn't available here either, so maybe it exists somewhere???)

Thanks

Zeke

BTW, here is what I have.  It gets 78mpg stock in the lupo in economy mode.

The 1.2-liter TDI has an output of 61hp and a maximum torque of 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) is available between 1800 and 2400 rpm

The 1.2 is just a 1.9 with only 3 cylinders and a small turbo

The 1.6 is IDI and has never been build as a TDI (Direct injection)

More info is in the dieselsuperbike thread:

Shouldn't it be a 1.425 liter engine if we just cut a cylinder off the end of a 1.9?

Nope, they always round to the nearest tenth of a liter.

Okay, but that still gives a 1.4 liter instead of a 1.2 liter....

It sounds more like 3/4 of a 1.6.

The 1.2 TDI is a neat motor, I have driving one around the block here in Ottawa, Audi A2 Transport Canada test vehicle. There was an article in the newspaper about it a couple years ago, they were averaging 90mpg (4.54L gallon) combined city and highway, the car was tiptronic/CVT style (no clutch). Cool car, lots of space. Not alot of power but enough.

That's 75mpg in US gallons.  Pretty darn good.  From the power/torque curves posted, it looks like it's got as much power as a 1.6NA, and since it's a bit lighter engine, that should help a bit.

If the 1.2 has a VNT turbo...

Kidding.. some known VNTs are nice & robust though (unlike the 1.9 ALH's VNT-15).

I'm thinking I want one for my other passion... Sleding.

Do up a 1.2 the same as they have on the superbike, or mabey even more. If I could get it to 120-150hp it would be an absolute monster drop it into my Summit HMX 162" and drop the gearing way down, with that kinda torque I could have like instant track speed at any throttle point, with out a fancy roller clutch, that and on the big climb's instead of reaching for the GO juice I would just let it torque its way up... HMMM.

Anyone know what a complete 1.2 with ECU ect.. would go for???
Edit: and approx weight?

a bit off topic but I have mechanical drawings of both the 1.9L 4 cyl and 2.5L 5 cyl TDI engines. I'd love to get my hands on a drawing of the 1.2L and 1.4L 3 cylinders.

I dug up the bore and stroke of the TDI 1.2, and sure enough, it is not three-quarters of a 1.9.

1.2 TDI Bore/Stroke in millimeters 76.3/87
1.9 TDI Bore/Stroke in millimeters 79.5/95.5
