I have a 83 audi 5000td, i wanted to know if the diesel engine can handle being run hard. I dont abuse the car at all and i keep the oil changed etc. But i do floor it quit a bit and rev it to the upper rpm's. The car only has 97k on it and does not use any oil. How do you guys think it will hold up?
I know its not the same car but i had a 86 jetta 1.6 td and i RAPED THAT THING! and it never burnt oil, always started but i went through lots of trannys (5 to be exact in one year)
Cheers
Jeff
i have a 93 1.9td with 263,000km, i don't redline it or high rpm until the oil's reached at least 180f. I occasionally go for some fun acceleration, and the odd highway run to 190kmph, but lately it's been shifting at 2000rpm and light footed, diesel is $1.14/L canadian
Most important is letting the fluids warm up first.
Yep. Diesels like to run hard, but ONLY after FULLY warmed up. If you stomp on it cold, you will cause all kinds of problems, including cracked cylinder head and tapered bores. Proven on Volvo diesels, which is your Audi five plus one more cylinder.
Don't do it!
I had an '83 Audi 5000td for 10 years. This motor is not intercooled and it was VW/Audi's first attempt at a turbocharged motor. The key is to watch your oil temperature gauge and what it is doing. There is a "normal" range that the temps sits at, I believe its at 90 C or 195 degrees, which is the first "tick" mark on the gauge. If you drive over about 60 to 62 mph, the needle will come off of that mark and that means your oil is getting too hot and creating problems with your engine.
This car is very heavy, especially for a 2.0 litre motor, and it was designed for when the speed limit in the USA was 55 MPH. You push it much harder and you will have problems. These motors will crack heads betwen the valve seats if run too hard or used for trailering. Even trailering my 2 550 jetskis was too much for my CA Audi 5000 td.
Drive it around town, drive it on highways to 62 or 3 indicated MPH, but if you want the car to last, don't do 75 in it, the tranny is only an "E" 3 speed, and running it much past 2800 RPM continous will heat soak the motor due to no intercooler.
Also, I strongly reccomend that you change out your oil and get MOBIL 1 Truck and SUV 5W-40 at Walmart, as well as use original Mann oil filters.
The Fram 2487's are junk and don't filter out enough, they should be avoided at all cost.
I usually saw 32 to 34.5 mpg in my Audi, I think it had about a 550 to 600 mile range per tank. Still miss it, it was a great ride.
thats for the advice. Do you think i will help at all if i add a intercooler? I was thinking of getting one off a later 5000 turbo. My oil temp stays below the 1st mark almost all the time so it runs pretty kewl. The car weights about 2900lb, i dont think thats much for a 2.0 diesel. The MK4 jetta/ golf tdi's are about the same without much more power. It normaly crusie at about 70mph and it seems to have pletty of power, the car has better pick up then my friends 2.0 automatic golf. It just really does not feel like it strains at all. Is there anything that i can do to prevent these problems with the car?

I noticed when looking up filters for my 1.6NA that there are two Fram #'s that fit it. One is a little tiny one (the 2487 I think), and the other looks like it is for a V-8 engine. Are the big ones any better?
neither fram is any good in a VW. get a mann or mahle filter as specified by VW for your motor.
An oil filter for a big block Ford will also fit a VW 1.6D...but the bypass valve opens up at 10 psi on the big block Ford filter and 30 on the VW diesel filter.
This allows crap to bypass the filter media and enter your engine.
