newbie Question:injection pump replaced.
« on: September 12, 2005, 11:15:49 am »
Hi

I am new with diesel engines and was wondering if anyone can help me.

I am very sorry about the technical terms because I am not familiar with them yet.

my old truck was using an injection pump with the partnumber
NP-VE4/8F2125RNP313. It was in bad shape so I needed to replace it, But I couldn't find an exact replacement. I later found an injection pump with a partnumber NP-VE4/9F2150RNP961, I installed it and the engine started just fine IMO.

I was wondering if the replacement will cause any long term damage to the engine? The new pump also have additional sensor that I dont know how to make use of.

Also :)

Is there a link you guys can point me to for beginner diesel person?

thanks

is your truck non-turbo?
maybe the extra sensor is the boost aneroid for a turbo car?
could you snap a photo of the pumps for us?

it's a non turbo truck.

and yes the new injection pump has an "aneroid" on top of the injection pump. The only reason I learned this was because you mentioned it.

I tried googling stuff before, But I just didn't know what to google for.

here are the location of the various sensors.

1. a two terminal sensor mounted near the left side of the injection pump with the timming pulley facing you.
2. a 3 terminal sensor on top of of the throttle lever axis

I will try to send pictures as soon as I can.

thanks for your help

Hi all

After going through the archives. I am starting to get a bit of an idea what is the differences between the two injection pumps I used.

my old pump is NP-VE4/8F2125RNP313 which can be broken down to
Type: bosch VE
Cylinder: 4
Plunger: 8mm
Pump RPM:2125
Rotation: R

for my new pump NP-VE4/9F2150RNP961
Type: bosch VE
Cylinder: 4
Plunger: 9mm
Pump RPM:2150
Rotation: R

and thanks to BlackTieTD's post
I now know that my new pump has an aneroid.

The questions I will be trying to answer now are.
1. what is the difference between the change in plunger size. according to some of the post a bigger plunger is better.

2. whats is going to be the effect of directly substituting a higher pump speed injection pump.

3. how did you guys get a copy of the zexel/bosch manuals/CDROM. I tried www.zexel.com , But it did not provide any info on how to obtain a copy.

thanks

here are the pictures of the new injection pump.
As can be seen below there 3 sensors/switches that someone might be able to identify.

1. Is near the cylinder head left side
2. another one on top of the throttle
3. and a switch near the throttle

the engine is a mazda R2. and the injection pump is from an old mazda RF.

I am very sorry that it's off topic and not about turbo VW's, But it is very difficult to find experts in diesel engines especially at the level of injection pump internals.

No apoligies necessary - welcome to the board!  I personally like looking and learning more about the "oddball" diesels and VE pumps. :)  (We'd also like to hear your opinion at this thread: http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1975 )

I wish I could help you on the sensors, but the best I can do is make my best guesses at it, so I'll give that a try.

Sensor on the side of the pump up high near the cylinder head left side:
It is just two wires going to it?  If so, I think it's an inductive RPM pickup that works off the governor flyweight gear inside the pump.  I've seen this on a VE pump from a mid-80's mitsubishi pickup.  IMO, it's a pretty darned cool feature to have on a VE pump...  should give you a dead-accurate tach reference signal.

Sensor on throttle linkage: I'm thinking it's an "idle" switch.

Sensor on top of the throttle: looks like the perfect place for a throttle position sensor to me. (It does remind me of something off a VW 1.9lTD pump, but I'm not that familar with it.)

Thanks for your help now, I have enough info to do a bit more googling.

what about the long term effects of bigger plunger size is there going to be a problem with that?

also :) what is the significance of the pump RPM rating?

thanks very much again.

The larger plunger may deliver more fuel, depends on camplate profile as well. This could result in more power, or just smoke more depending on air supply.

The RPM in the part number is the pump shaft speed that the engine will be governed to. The pump rotates at half engine speed so you need to double this number to get the maximum governed speed of the engine. As an example, a pump marked 2125 would allow a maximum engine speed of about 4250rpm.

thanks guys. This really clears up a lot of my questions.
the swap of the injection pump seems to work fine although I haven't run it for very long.
