Buying an Engine Need Advice
«

I am considering buying a 1.6l turbo engine with hydro head from a guy a I have never met a few hours away from me. What do I need to look for to be sure this is in fact a turbo block? Besides a gapping hole in the side of the block what else should I look for or signs to cause me to steer clear?
Oh yeah, the head is of the block so I should be able to see the piston tops and inside the bores. I plan to try to rotat the crank as well.
Thanks!

Look at the two letter engine code on the front of the block just below the headgasket and inline with the #3 cylinder, I think CY, MF, SB, 1V is an ecodiesel block but IIRC it has piston coolers also, I don't think SB ever made it over the pond so I doubt it's that.
Some others hopefully will chime in and let fly some more info.

'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.
I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Thanks.
I forgot to mention that the seller says that this turbo motor is out of his 1986 Golf. I don't know if that helps narrow this down any.

I would pull the head and make sure the bores aren't trashed and on the third overbore. Because then you 'd basically be buying a really big paperweight.

Easiest way would be to rub the soot off the top of the piston and read the number. Otherwise you could use a bore gauge.

OK, I know the pistons are numbered I,II,III,IV. So what will they be if it has been bored?

Standard size: 76.48
1st overbore: 76.73
2nd overbore: 76.98
3rd overbore: 77.48
One of these four sets of numbers will be stamped on the top of the piston.
