water pump belt question
« on: June 23, 2009, 06:59:12 pm »
I just installed a new Contitech timing belt. IP timing was right on afterwards at 0.039" so I didn't have to touch the IP adjustment. In doing the job, I removed everything except the water pump, so the power steering pump, A/C compressor and alternator are currently off. I want to idle the engine (not drive it) to warm it up to flush the coolant plus look for oil leaks on the seals so need to have just the water pump running. Is the A/C compressor also on the water pump belt and it must be installed so that I can tension the water pump  belt? I didn't pay attention when I ripped it apart and the Bently does not show the details I need.

On mine you can drive the water pump with just the power steering belt...

The AC compressor belt also runs over the water pump pulley, but in my case the AC belt isn't actually capable of driving the water pump at all, the outer part of the pulley on the water pump for the AC belt has a bearing in it and just acts like an idler.  This doesn't seem to be common to all years though, just "some" cars.

Regardless, just the PS belt will take care of things.

I got all the belts back on! That was fun since I took all the accessory mounting brackets and adjusters off and just threw them into a cleaning bucket to wash the gunk off. The only bracket I did not remove was the AC compressor bracket. The AC compressor has to be there as an idler like you said and was a *** to install. The alternator belt has to go on first and goes to the inner AC compressor pulley and an an idler/adjuster pulley. Next to go on is the water pump belt which goes to the outer AC compressor pulley and the inner vibration damper pulley. The last belt to go on is power steering pump to the outer vibration damper pulley. Looks like a lot of work if the alternator belt breaks since 2 other belts has to come off first. Any tricks to make it easier? This just popped into my head: I think taking the headlight out will make getting to the alternator and AC compressor tensioner much easier. Anyone do that?

I'd love to have one serpentine belt that drives everything. Anyone done that?
