Cooling fan not working
« on: June 16, 2009, 12:13:56 am »
Ok The new rabbit I bought the cooling fan isnt working. Thats because none of the wires are hooked up. IT has two wires coming from the harness that are cut two wires coming out of the fan motor are cut, and the two our of the sensor are cut. No doubt due to the new radiator and fan installation. Any Idea how to wire this up and get it going? Not really over heating but never gets driven in town much either.

Sorry for the horrible picture.. but in my MK1 the plug looks like this:

It is two wires that are brown and red. It also has two plugs one of which isn't plugged in but still activates the fan when operating temperatures are reached, doesn't make sense to me lol.. Maybe for a dual fan setup from the factory?

You did say rabbit correct? what year?

yeah its an 81. The plug coming from the harness is cut off. Then there is a plug that is connected to the fan its cut off. Then there is a plug connected to the sensor connected to nothing else.

when I got my MK2 some A hole had butchered the wiring...

If you have a 2 speed fan setup - the low speed is live wired direct from the fuseblock to the low side temp switch pin going to the fan +ve wire, high speed is wired direct from the battery through a relay screwed on the fan shroud picking up its contact signal from the high speed switch terminal

If you have a single speed fan - just get a Bosch 40 amp relay and wire it in to help reduce the load on your fuseblock wiring

there is wire in your wiring exiting under the battery for the fan its supposed to be red or red/black (dunno coz nearly all VW wiring of the era were same) - you can test it with a test lamp for 12V positive coming from the cooling fan fuse in the fuse block.

wire that to any terminal in the sensor and then wire the other one to the relay point 85, wire the fan red wire to the point 30 in the relay and a wire (with a fuse prefferably) from the battery +ve to point 87 on the relay, the point 86 should be grounded anywhere (either the fan ground wire or directly on the frame)..
