A friend wants to sell me his 81 NA rabbit
« on: June 11, 2009, 03:17:39 pm »
It needs a good bit of work. The starter is bad the ignition needs replaced. Needs struts and a ton of interior work. Now it does run pretty good. he drives it to work and what not. He wants $700 for it. Body is clean and rust free. does it sound like a decent deal?

To me the body is the most important part if you want it to look half decent too.  The rest is bolt on stuff from just enough to get it running to insane amounts of money.  It's just a matter of how bad you are infected with this disease and coming here everyday just makes it worse. ;D  It's really ----ed me up bad ;D    P.S., I have an 81 Rabbit too and I got it for free from my friend many dollars ;) ago.  He even thinks I'm crazy and he got the disease from me :o

In 1990 I had 5 Rabbits at one time. 2 were good cars and 3 were good bodied parts cars.  The neighbors said they heard of breeding Rabbits but not like this and the County got after me for the 3 in the yard

The only cure is a better one.  I really like  the new TDI's but I like the simplicity of these old ones more. ;)

To the OP, I'd probly get it. No rust is very handy and it looks waaay better than a rust bucket ;)
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Personally I would pass, I bought a beater for 700, and regretted it. It ended up needing much more work than anticipated, and I eventually ended up swapping the engine into something else just to get rid of that money pit.   I don't know how far you are from portland, but there are two jetta diesels on craigslist for about that price that might need much less work. Just my two cents.... and I agree about the diesel bug... I have three in various states of repair.

:edit: just checked craigslist and they must have sold... but like I said spend a little more and get something that has less problems unless your budy is willing to help you fix it for free

Ah... look on Craigslist - I've seen cheeper / better condition diesel Rabbits in your neck of the woods. Even further East in Idaho.
