Golf 2 GTD for parts or export from France

I have to admit defeat. I cannot register my Golf GTD that I just bought on Ebay in France because its tied up in beaurocracy. The car suffered an accident in the hands of its previous owner, and an insurance assessor classified the car as "Not economically repairable". This now means that the carte grise (reg cert) is blocked and cannot be changed to new ownership. It may be possible to register the car outside France, where the laws are a bit more sensible and there isn't such a big deal made out of everything, but I cannot guarantee this. Hence, I am offering this car for parts.

OK so the car:

Its a 1991 Mk2 GTD, featuring electric windows, electric mirrors (not working), central locking, velour seats, a very tidy interior and a lovely engine thats been regularly serviced and well maintained. I have lots of service receipts for the car. It drives beautifully. The only complaint is the rear wheel bearings need replacing. It even passed the Controle Technique (roadworthiness test) here! There is 340,000km's on the clock, but only 200,000 on the engine, as one of the previous owners put the car in second gear instead of 4th at high motorway speeds and the original engine threw a leg out of bed. Turbo is fine, all ancillary engine components are fine. The rev counter does not work though, but I think its only something simple. The interior is very tidy. There's the normal amount of wear and tear to be expected on a car this age but its by no means shabby. There's a couple of bits and pieces such as the passenger side door handle needs replacing and the passenger door lock doesn't lock with the central locking, but does unlock.

Bodywise, there are 2 dents in the rear panel, one where the VW badge should be, and one on the corner. There are 3 alloys and one steel wheel on it, and there are no badges on it. The rear bumper has not been painted and is a bit crooked but not too bad. Its just badly mounted. After the crash, the front bumper, right wing and bonnet were replaced, as well as a headlamp and grille. The paint job was a disaster though. Theres some overspray on the swage line trim, and its like orange peel. Possibly some sanding, flatting and polishing would get it looking presentable though.

Overall this is a good car, and I'd love to see it staying on the road, but French beaurocracy being what it is, I just don't see this being possible.

There's just a couple of dings under the boot lid, if you look at the picture of the back.

Paris, but if you want the car, I could meet you somewhere so long as its not too far away and you pay for a train ticket back to Paris for me. I could go to Calais or Cherbourg for example.

Check with Ebay, IIRC the seller of the car has to return your purchase in that situation. They have rules about selling a car in this condition.

Yeah what they advise is to contact the seller and try to settle it amicably first. Thats the process I'm at now. If I dont have success there, I'll raise a dispute through ebay. She's being stuborn and uncooperative. I even said to her I'd help her sell the car if she just gives me a refund. If she drags it out she'll get no help from me. I put this ad up to get in early because frankly I think I'll have to sell it myself.

What a shame they are so unreasonable about this. I wish it were easier to import cars into the U.S. from other countries, people really hold on to turbo diesel VWs here. Much of this country is still free and easy in the sense that they really do not care how roadworthy your car is. I met someone from Germany that was taking pictures of peoples bald tires because he could not believe the local police would accept that.

Have you thought of any other creative options to keep it? Would it be possible or economical to register it in your country, Ireland, or another country and drive around "temporarily" in France. Could you register an LHD car in Ireland? I have a friend from Spain. He keeps a car there just to use when he travels home, it has Andorra registration (I think he also has family in the country of Andorra). He told me he does this because car ownership in Andorra is very simple and straightforward compared to the rest of Europe.

Well the problem is in Ireland Id have to pay vehicle registration tax to register the car there and its 36% of the open market value of the car, which they determined as being €2000. To be honest all this has left a bad taste in my mouth. Ive been pleading with, shouting at and trying to reason with so many people that I just want it over. I'll get rid of the car and get another GTD somewhere else.

The previous owner has agreed to give me a refund, so this car is not for sale any more. However, I'm sure the car will appear on ebay shortly.

it would be nice if someone imported a whole bunch of those GTD's over in Europe to NA.  great little cars

a mk2 wouldn't be too bad to have imported here, i think you'd jus thave to put us spec glass and bumpers on it and have it inspected by some special import place then you're good to go, i'm not sure though
