K14 A/R's and trims & where to get one
« on: June 09, 2009, 06:46:10 pm »
I have some questions abut the K14 turbo's.  I'm thinking about putting one on my 1.6 T/D Rabbit which is a daily driver and I'm just looking for something that will spool up a little quicker and maby be better on the mountains.  What are the A/R's of these and also what is the difference between A/R and trim in general and also what is wheel clipping refering to as a modification?.  I think my old T/3 is 36 turbine and 42 compressor, does anybody know what the K14's numbers are and which one would be preferable for something that I don't want to have to turn the fuel up on a lot and what kinds of boost should I see on a pretty good pull on a mountain?  I'm seeing about 7 now on the old t/3 which doesn't seem to have any excess play in it and no wear marks on the housing.  Do you think the K14 would do any better on both top and bottom end?  I'm ready to order one if I know what to ask for this time.

Refering to the post above what is a place you might recomend to get a k14 that will fit a 83 1.6 T/D manifold and eventualy use a stock T/D pump?

Your T3 should be producing more than 7 psi with stock fueling.  The wastegate must not be working properly or is leaking.

The K14 will produce that same boost earlier and will maintain it throughout the upper rpms.

Any k14 from a VW 1.6 or 1.9 will bolt up.  The 1.9 K14's had a larger compressor wheel but same outward dimensions.  I'm not sure of the specifics.  You need a different oil return and you'll need to add a bushing to the compressor inlet as it is a smaller O.D. than the T3 compressor inlet.

I did lap the valve about 3 weeks ago, maby 1000 mi. ago at most by chucking it in a drill with the grinding compound. It has no operating wastegate and I have the N/A pump on it right now with stock fuel settings and rebuilt Giles 155's injectors.  Would that be about normal for the N/A pump with the original T3?  I can wind out 4th gear on the flat though up to 11 at this setting with a little gray smoke.  I know I have to get my T/D pump back on that I couldn't get to run after I rebushed and sealed it.  I took it off and dissasembled it and don't see a thing wrong and everything seems to work smooth.  I guess it's hard to judge one of these without the LDA type pump.  It was definately more powerful the first 300 miles though even with the turbo that didn''t make much boost but it did have the T/D pump on then.  I had to take it off because of. leaks which I fixed but haven't tried it the second time yet since I took it apart to check that it wasn't timed wrong and the control collar was the right direction.  Everything in it is clean and seems fine but it did the first time too after I installed it after the re-seal, rebush job.  My timing right now is 1.17 and after many different settings this seems the best and starts quick and doesn't have any high EGT's or run over 195 on the mountain.  Is that anywhere normal with this combination. Just a 2 in. exhaust and a Magnaflow muffler.
