GOLF MK2 1.6TD - Problems in cold start
« on: June 08, 2009, 07:00:18 am »
Hello,
I tried searching for a solution in the forum before posting but I couldbt find an exact one.

I bought the car 1.5 month ago, and it drives and starts okay, until couple days ago, when I started the car in the morning I needed to use the choke and it started pretty easy, a bit of smoke, but nothing serious.
when the engine is warm (or in the afternoon when the temp is higher) its not a problem to start as well.
But couple of days ago, when I tried to cold start in the morning, even with the choke, it didnt start, it made the noise of starting, some smoke came out, but the car didnt start, I waited couple of minutes, turned off the choke, gave it couple of more tries and eventually  it did start, covering the neighbourhood with smoke...lots of smoke! but after it drove okay. nothing unusual.
from the optional solutions I found so far, it looks like I need to change the Glow Plugs.
Does anybody think differently ?
and if so, is it a problem to do so? I define myself as somebody with pretty good technical skills, I got the Haynes book for this model, but not for diesel engine :(
Since I live in Luxembourg, and I'm not originally from here.. I have a feeling that it will be pretty expensive to take it to the shop...
Is there is a "step by step" guide to help me do it ? (with pictures...)

Thank you for your help.

Assaf
