Well I blew a coolant hose the other day and hit in the red. Tried to limp her home without to much damage but I think it is too late. Put all new rubber on and filled her up. Started okay. Nothing bad more then normal

. Sits for a second while I try to work air out of the system, and she started to buck. Miss fires a little and is smoking worse then tommy chong. with the cap off the overflow I have a nice smokey mist flowing back in. I notice coolant on the front of the motor coming from the gasket. So what do you think? Will I get lucky and not have to buy a new head. I think tomorrow I may start to take her apart but I don't have much time with family issues right now.

Take the head to a machine shop to see if it's flat and definately have it pressure checked. Is it the 79 Rabbit that you are talking about? Believe me I understand the addiction and I bet mine was uglier than your's when I started with it.

I was wondering the same thing and what that can set me back. Im super broke right now and only paid 600 for the car a few years back. I started to take her apart today but got angry and gave up for the day, 2 hours into it. Im more angry at other stuff so I don't want to break the car more being mad haha.

Not to sound negative or anything but if you can find a decent known to be good 1.6 for less than $600 I think it's gonna be your best bet. This is where we start putting way more money in these things than they're ever gonna be worth and can be replaced for the same price sometimes. But the bottom line is how much you like it and are addicted to it and I know I probably have ten times in mine more than it's worth. The ARP studs are gonna be in the neighborhood of 100-120 bucks depending on where you get them and with the 1.5 they are more prone to block cracking than the others from what I've read here so I wouldn't even consider putting it together again with the bolts, for that matter it could be cracked now . The machine shop price will probably be 2-3 hundred for magnafluxing, pressure testing and resurfacing if it's determined worth fixing the head not including a valve job. If you put it together with the 11 mm. studs and then the engine has problems down the line which it probably will then they can only be used in the 11 mm. 1.6 up to 1982 or 1983. It's all a matter of how much you really want to keep it going, if you're not real attached I'd look for another diesel VW complete car but at least an engine and have some spare parts at least. Everything is a gamble when this happens and everything you do to a 1.5 you can do to a 1.6 for the same price and probably cheaper in some instances depending on parts availability.
Well I have a tough time trying to find anything around here as far as diesel engine go that dont cost bank because they are in a car. HA. I find a few 1.5l out of the car for cheap sometimes but why go to the same old thing? Well anyways I made some progress considering I can only work for like an hour at a time. Head should be off soon and pics will come. Well anyways I have a belt question. I had a problem trying to get the right v belts. I have ac and the supposed "right" belts were to short. I got a belt but most of them get way to close the end of the adjustment not in the middle like I say it should be. Im not sure if the brackets for the ac are home made cuz they look like it. first question is how should be belt ride in the pulley. slightly raised? straight aligned? or slightly lower then the pulley. I think I have the wrong width for the one. I tried to take off my water pump pulley and it slips on the belt really easy. Shouldnt there be resistance? I cant really think of the question I wanted to ask. grrr.
One more thing! I still have the six point crank bolt. Should I really get the new 12 point? Im scared to attempt to get it off or more get it back on to torque. I just read a post about that and it reminded me to ask.
Stock power and doesnt drive it to hard.

So I got my head gasket today and right at the metal cylinder hole it's got a bend I don't know if I should use it or return it any suggestions want a pic?
